NFL Rookie Watch@NFLRookieWatxhThe potential 2024 QB draft class absolutely showed OUT in week one.
This QB class could be the best the NFL has EVER seen.
Caleb Williams (USC): 18/24, 319 passing yards, 5 TD’s
Drake Maye (UNC): 24/32, 269 yards, 2 TD’s, 2 INT’s
Shedeur Sanders (Colorado): 38/47, 510 yards (led country), 4 TD’s
Michael Penix Jr. (UW): 29/40, 450 yards, 5 TD’s
Quinn Ewers (Texas): 19/30, 260 yards, 3 TD’s
JJ McCarthy (Michigan): 26/30, 280 yards, 3 TD’s
Bo Nix (Oregon): 23/27, 287 yards, 3 TD’s
Riley Leonard (Duke): 17/33, 175 yards, 98 rushing yards, 1 TD
Spencer Rattler (SC): 30/39, 353 yards
Joe Milton (Tennessee): 21/30, 201 yards, 4 total TD’s
Jordan Travis (FSU): 23/31, 342 yards, 5 total TD’s
And only ONE of these QB’s came away with a loss

If we drafted Maye, I'd feel comfortable with it.  I trust O'Connell to pick the right guy being a former QB and strong x's and O's guy.  I think he's the perfect coach to get the most out of any of these rookie QBs. Maye has a ton of tools, just needs to clean up the inconsistencies in his game.  Could be our Josh Allen...

From today's GBN;

Rumors de jour … Of course, its smoke and mirrors time in the NFL so one always wants to be cautious not to overact to any buzz, but there a couple of stories that don’t seem to want to die and may have some legs which could ultimately impact the early going at the 2024 draft. One has Minnesota prepared to deal star WR Justin Jefferson who will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season and wants a monster deal. A couple of possible destinations have been mentioned; one is Cincinnati, the other is a possible deal with Arizona in which the Vikings would send Jeffereson and the 11th pick overall in the draft to the Cardinals in exchange for the 4th pick where Minnesota would presumably grab a QB. The Cardinals have been thought to be targeting Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison with that pick, but Jefferson is already proven, plus they’d still get a close-to top 10 pick in this year’s draft. We even wondered whether the Vikings might try and tempt New England if the Patriots were thinking more of taking Harrison themselves with the 3rd pick. However, there are other reports out there which indicate that the Patriots are actually very much focused on acquiring a veteran FA WR and are waiting to see how the situation with Calvin Ridley plays out in Jacksonville. The Patriots are also reportedly waiting to see how the situations plays out with the LA Chargers who have just released Mike Williams. On the one hand, it would seem in fact that the Patriots are thinking of addressing their WR need in FA meaning that they likely won’t be trading the #3 pick. It also means that the Chargers themselves could very well be looking at a WR like Washington’s Rome Udunze or LSU’s Malik Nabers with the 5th pick. Stay tuned!

This does make me pause, because it's really bizarre that Jefferson hasn't been signed. It would seem to me the biggest slam dunk in recent memory to get him signed to an extebsion. It makes me wonder if there were back door agreements on waiting to see what happens with Cousins and perhaps he'd be an even more tradable commodity not being under contract? It is smoke and mirrors season...but you never know

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see JJ dealt for a possible shot at a top QBOTF.  No way am I going to guess if it happens or not, but nothing would surprise me this off season.

Some will disagree but if both were options I’d much rather trade the picks necessary to move up than JJ. Even if that meant 3 firsts.

I agree. It’s frustrating a deal hasn’t been done.

Like i said in another thread…Kirk’s negotiation and the line we drew in the sand could be affecting JJ’s negotiation. Don’t think he wasn’t paying attention to how it all went down.

Kirk was his QB from the jump and he could be seeing that how Kirk was treated is how faces and leaders of this franchise get treated in negotiations.

We probably get the deal done, but it’s not the slam dunk it should be. A lot will depend on the draft, I feel. If we shit the bed and don’t get a big time QBOTF, he ain’t gonna want to stick around for the Darnold Show. Yeah we could franchise him, but i can guarantee he’ll hold out.

Yep JJ, when you’re 36,  don’t expect a fully guaranteed 4 yr deal…  ;) B)

lol…. I’m just sayin. Teammates see how each other get treated when they try to get their bag. I’m not saying there’s an unrepairable riff between both camps, but there is definitely something going on. Otherwise this deal would already be done.

Kirk and Danielle wanted to get paid this offseason and the Vikings kicked both of them to the curb. Jefferson ALSO wants to get paid…ALOT. How do you think he’s feelin right now about how much the Vikings want him?

And I'm just saying JJ is a WRer. How many games did we win without him last year? More than I ever thought was probable. I think Minnesota loves JJ but they are really assessing their options right now. Taking their time. JJ is going to get his bag.

This is the time, right now, for Minnesota to get their QB. It really is all about the QB.

Agree. At least that way you're trading rolls of the dice for other rolls of the dice, and not a proven NFL player.

So many keep talking about all the 1st round QBs in the draft and that we have 11th pick. I guess completely forgetting the odds of hitting on one. For example, 2021 was a similar year with Lawrence, Zach Wilson and Lance going 1, 2, 3, Fields at 11 and Mac Jones at 15. At this time three years ago, each was getting raves by many.

Can you imagine losing Cousins AND JJ? All for Trey Lance or Zach Wilson?

Tee Higgins would have be part of the trade going to Minnesota. So if the Bengals gave up Higgins, their first round pick (18th), second round pick (49th), and a 3rd in 2025....any takers?

To compound on your second paragraph, I also hate this idea that "it's a 6 QB draft, just get one". A few months ago it was a 2 QB draft. Then it was a 3 QB draft. Then 4. And now 6? Reeks of desperation from fans with lower picks (like us) and possibly front offices/media too. The more QBs the media can pump up, the more interest there will be in the draft. It's just smart business. If it's truly a 6 QB draft why aren't the top teams falling over themselves to trade back?

Being happy with "any of the 6" isn't how life works. Show me 6 candy bars and I can rank them for you. Yes, I'll be happy with any candy at all, but I want the damn Twix or Reese's.
If the team is in love with Penix or Nix then boom. Drafting at 11 could work-- It still might not though! Crazy things happen. Guys rise guys fall. I guarantee the team has 1 or 2 guys they love more than the others and waiting until 11 is extremely risky. Getting the consolation prize at the most important position in sports is how you end up with, well I won't say his name but his wife is a looker.

…and this is what happens when every GM in the league knows we’re trotting Sam Darnold out there and are 100% drafting a QB in the first.

It is smoke and mirrors season...but you never know

Some will disagree but if both were options I’d much rather trade the picks necessary to move up than JJ. Even if that meant 3 firsts.

I agree. It’s frustrating a deal hasn’t been done.

I dont think it ever was a 2 QB draft,  maybe it is for some teams,  likely many teams,  but I doubt it very much that if you could get honest answers from anybody,  those 2 QBs would be a different combination of the top six for most teams.  Williams gets  a lot of love,  but many arent seeing the lock that some want to profess seeing, the same goes for everyone of the others in that top 6.   I say if they love a guy,  make sure you get your guy,  but you better be damn certain if you are going for that top 3 spots.

According to Florio via KFAN, Vikings are "obsessed" with drafting star QB this year.

Based on what they attempted to do last year and the situation they find themselves this year, I think this is true. I even think they'd move up to 1 (no matter the cost) if they thought the Bears would trade with them.

But I think it could be the Commies at 2. There have been rumors that Washington is interested in trading for Fields. They could trade back to 11, get a haul of future picks to rebuild that team, using just one of them to trade for Fields. Plus they'd still have the 11th pick if they wanted to draft a QB to compete with Fields.

Vikings get their choice between Daniels and Maye....or even Williams if the Bears don't like what they see when they vet him.

Florio is a bozo but I agree too. The fallback plan of Sam Darnold is just such a long... fall... back. No GM can sell that with a straight face barring some kind of miracle career resurrection for Darnold.
I see there's now a rumor thread about us moving up to 4. I think they're gonna move heaven and earth to get to 4 or higher. Letting other teams decide who the face of our franchise is by taking their leftovers is a dicey.

It's such an incredibly bad strategy doubling down on that player busting by mortgaging future high round draft capital is not something I'd want to be a part of. Even if that means rolling with Darnold and a mid round rookie for a year. DO NOT MORTGAGE OUR FUTURE TO TAKE A SWING AT THE 4TH OR 5TH BEST QB IN THIS DRAFT!
