2024 QB Watch
NFL Rookie Watch@NFLRookieWatxhThe potential 2024 QB draft class absolutely showed OUT in week one.
This QB class could be the best the NFL has EVER seen.
Caleb Williams (USC): 18/24, 319 passing yards, 5 TD’s
Drake Maye (UNC): 24/32, 269 yards, 2 TD’s, 2 INT’s
Shedeur Sanders (Colorado): 38/47, 510 yards (led country), 4 TD’s
Michael Penix Jr. (UW): 29/40, 450 yards, 5 TD’s
Quinn Ewers (Texas): 19/30, 260 yards, 3 TD’s
JJ McCarthy (Michigan): 26/30, 280 yards, 3 TD’s
Bo Nix (Oregon): 23/27, 287 yards, 3 TD’s
Riley Leonard (Duke): 17/33, 175 yards, 98 rushing yards, 1 TD
Spencer Rattler (SC): 30/39, 353 yards
Joe Milton (Tennessee): 21/30, 201 yards, 4 total TD’s
Jordan Travis (FSU): 23/31, 342 yards, 5 total TD’s
And only ONE of these QB’s came away with a loss

The Vikings are going to have some options to look at@"pattersaur" said:Current Top 5- Bears (Panthers)CardinalsFootball TeamPatriotsGiants Even if the Bears and Cardinals both trade out, it seems safe to assume both of those picks will be QBs. Then you have QB-needy Washington, New England, and probably NYG. The Vikings are going to have to get really comfy with the 5th-ish QB taken in the draft, or make a colossal move into the top 3 if they want their choice after Williams/Maye. Best case for us is Bears and Cards both move back, but do so within the top 5. So WAS and NE get their QBs, CHI+ARI pick, and QB3 "falls" to NYG at 5. Pick 6 is LAC, 7 is TEN, 8 is CHI again, and 9 is NYJ. So in this scenario, QB4 could be had in that 8-10 range hopefully. Maybe CHI and NYG surprise and don't take QBs. That would really have us sitting pretty but it seems far-fetched.One of the either the Bears or Cards could be a home for Fields. And don't forget that QBs like Russell Wilson will be out there too, along with Tannehill and Mayfield. I think Cousins re-ups in Minnesota, but even he could be an option for one of those teams.

The plot thickens! Let's see if we can't get this thread to 50 pages by Draft Day lol.

If JJ McCarthy lays an egg against Alabama on Monday, his draft stock is going to take a hit. I think there's already questions about him as far as not knowing exactly what you might be getting. If I had to choose now what I THINK will happen, it'll be Bo Nix.
I'm not yet convinced that JJM will declare. A lot will depend on the results of the CFP & if Harbaugh jumps to the pros. With the NIL $ available to JJM, remaining in Michigan may be a palatable option. I guess that I'll believe it when I see it.
IIRC Parcells had a checklist for evaluating college QBs & the likelihood that they could successfully transition to the pro game. He said that college QBs should have a minimum of 30 starts & a 70% win rate. I have to think that both Nix & Penix meet this metric FWIW.
One that wasn't on Parcell's checklist was season-ending injuries, which has to be a concern about Penix. Love his poise in the pocket though.
I dont know that there is QB in the group that can help/hurt his stock more with his bowl game performance. I have seen enough to know that I love his game, but the durability question looms large and the Vikings havent been lucky in rolling the dice lately on "injury bugged" draft picks. However, I would love to see the kid play for the Vikings, he has the arm to make about any throw and the accuracy to really make use of our receiving talents. If they pass I will understand, but if they take him I will be elated to see how his journey unfolds. Really seems like a great young man.
Well said and I agree, but I guarantee this kid is very polarizing in NFL front offices. I bet he is all over the board in NFL Draft rooms and for the reasons you mention. Some NFL team always takes a QB much higher than the 'media experts' have him and Penix might be that kid.....or he falls. Bo Nix could also be that player. Both Nix and Penix will be 24 years old before or right after the Draft, compared to a kid like Quinn Evers who will be only 21 years old.
Having watched a few Oregon games this fall, I would take Bo Nix in a heartbeat if he falls to us in the second round.

In comparison, JJM is only 20 years old. JJM has a higher ceiling than either Penix or Nix but also a lower floor.
We did learn this season that KOC wants a pocket passer to run his offense. Both Penix & Nix would fit the bill. However, he passed on Levis in last year's draft & he's a pocket passer, so who knows. The latest on Ewers is that he's expected to return to Texas which is puzzling to me since they have Arch Manning waiting in the wings.

I laughed at this when I saw it. But this is actually more likely than it seems on the surface.
I read somewhere that Wilson's next team will not have to pay much of anything in terms of salary and cap space. Sounds like the Broncos will be on the hook for nearly all of it. Not sure how accurate that is.
But is there a more perfect bridge QB than that? A 7X Pro Bowl QB that you don't have to pay? In a year when you're hit with $28M?
Now...I'm no big fan of Wilson's. He can be a clown and he's not as good as Kirk Cousins. But if we're unable to come to terms with Kirk, and we do draft a QB this spring, Wilson just might be a pretty good low-cost bridge to the post-Cousins, QB-on-a-rookie-deal promised land...(for those who observe). You also have to think the Vikings would be at or near the top of his list of teams.
Just take a breath before you start screaming at me.

For Penix, I don't think his age drops him as much as the fact that he's got fundamental flaws in his footwork and windup....not to mention his injury history. His patience in the pocket will serve him well in the NFL, but man, there's so much wrong with his delivery. I'd be surprised if he goes in the 1st. Nix is a much cleaner prospect IMO.Don't know why they passed on Levis, but it wasn't because he was a pocket passer only. Guy's a terror running the ball. My hunch says it was character, but we probably won't find out for years.

Agreed. I think the achilles thing with Kirk is a much bigger deal than fans seem to be making it out to be. Russ for 2 years makes a lot of sense if we draft a rookie. If he plays well for a season he’s a very tradeable asset or you keep him if the rook needs more time.Russ is the same age as Kirk. Not as good but no Achilles concern. Also likely much cheaper. He makes a lot of sense if he’s fine with a one or two year deal if Kirk is wanting more than that.
Even if Kirk is still the primary target, Wilson’s availability might help the Vikings a bit in negotiations so I see this Denver debacle as a good thing for us.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not for it and I hate agreeing with Maroon...but Wilson has put up over 3,000 yards passing and a combined 29 TD's on the season. He can still play and we all know Payton is a douche. Throw in the fact you could likely get him cheap because of the guaranteed money he's receiving from Denver, and there might not be a better bridge quarterback out there. I think KOC also loves the option of having a quarterback that can make plays with his legs so check that box for Wilson.Would you rather have Wilson on a cheap two year deal, fully healthy, or would you rather have Cousins on an expensive, mostly guaranteed two year deal, where he would likely start the season on IR and his health becomes a question going forward?

It's good in that it gives us some flexibility...options where very few exist. I read more this morning that seemed to suggest that the fewer dollars Wilson takes from his new team, the more he sticks it to the Broncos. And it sounds like he might be in a mood to do just that. But I also read that Payton simplified the offense to cater to Wilson's deteriorating skills, and that he was "grating" in the locker room. No big surprise there, but I have a hard time seeing KOC signing off on that.

Cousins. How expensive is "expensive?" How guaranteed is "mostly." And why would his health become a question after recovering from the injury? No more a question than anyone else. There's nothing to agree or disagree with because I'm not advocating for anything. I'm not saying we should or shouldn't do this. I throw the Wilson thing out there because it's one option no one is talking about. And the no-money thing might be pretty tempting for a team who has to absorb $28M dead. But I think it's a pretty severe last resort.
Ideally, the Vikings sign Cousins to a deal that has the injury discount baked in. And then we draft a QB. In terms of what we "should" do, this one is in the lead by a mile.

I'm just agreeing that he could be a real option as a bridge QB if the the organization isn't comfortable with Cousins price tag or his age coming off an achillies injury because it plays into the potential for addition injury and that's not what you want with a 36 year old quarterback. It's a risk, and how much money would the organization be comfortable with investing in that risk...? None of us really know. What we do know is we wouldn't sign him to an extension prior to the season, and how does this change now with Kirk being another year older and coming off a major injury? Its going to be a very, very interesting offseason on the quarterback front
Options are good. Options are potential leverage.
Anything that looks, smells or feels like a short-term QB (if the KC thing goes south) is a good thing for the Vikings.
Anyone here on the Penix train? Or JJMc?
Going to be fun watching both tonight.

Penix. JJ missed too many throws today while Penix kept fitting the ball in tight windows. Just my igorant observation from today’s game. Not sire if being a leftie is bad or puts him at a disadvantage but I will wait to hear from more knowledgeable folks
