Where will Kirk end up?
And why is Joe Montana high?
Kirk is an amazing guy, it hurts me so much that I’m over him 😭 pic.twitter.com/eFrypw4ula

Florio speaks as if this is a one-sided negotiation. It's also possible that the Vikings are NOT sitting on their hands, have made their best offer, and Kirk just wants to see if another team is willing to offer more guaranteed or a longer term. I mean...isn't this possible as well?
I'm just not sure how the Vikings all of a sudden sweeten their offer from last offseason when they couldn't come to an agreement on an extension with Kirk now another year older and coming off a major injury that might cause him to miss the start of the season. How do we go from not extending him last offseason to all of a sudden giving him a 3 year guaranteed big money deal based on the circumstances? The Cousins free agency saga is the NFL story of the offseason. I still have to believe the Vikings have a hard line in the sand and Kirk probably gets a better offer from another team.
Agree, time for a new approach and chapter in Viking world.

The situation is different every year. The roster is different. We now have Addison, Pace, Flores and a pick in the top 11. None of which we had during the prior negotiation. The money is different. We no longer have Thielen, Cook, Peterson and Z. We also now have roughly $130M in cap space for 2025.Kirk is different as well. Yes, he's a year older and recovering from an injury. Big factors to be sure. But one of the big questions last year was how would he look returning to the same offense for the first time in 7 seasons. We have the answer to that question now: REALLY FREAKING GOOD. So putting Kirk in that same offense for year three is very promising, and might be worth adding some flexibility to the financial vision.
I think a rigid financial strategy that doesn't have flexibility to allow for changing facts is a big mistake. "A sign of intellect is the ability to change your mind in the face of new facts." --somebody smart.

Yep, I think so....at least about a hard line from the Vikings.
We'll find out what Kirk is really all about and if he really is true to his word that he wants to be a Viking and would take less money to do so. Nothing about the way he has operated his entire career would lead me believe that there is any validity to that and you know there will be a team or two that come at him with bigger contract offers..
...except for the fact that this is exactly what he did the last time he was a free agent.
If Kirko returns then drafting our QBOTF becomes even more of a priority. Because a Kirko led Vikings team will win more games resulting in lower draft positions. You have the perfect storm of a deep QB pool & the highest first round pick that we've had in a number of years. Time to pull the trigger.

What I think is still the same though is the Vikings widely reported desire to land a long term answer at the position, preferably on a rookie deal. Unfortunately due to draft positioning we haven't been able to make that happen, which forces us back to the bargaining table with Kirk and his agent with money being kicked into dead years. I really think we want off this cycle which is why the hard line stance on an extension made sense last offseason, and likely the same this offseason

The Cards also offered more than the Vikings.

Couldn't agree more. I think the only thing that might possibly move the Vikings off QB in the draft is a 3-year deal for Kirk. And even THEN, I'd take one.
"The Vikings did touch base with Cousins' camp last week, as they got their pre-combine meetings going, so the lines of communication are open. More clarity could come... next week. The current MN brass, now going into its 3rd season, really likes Cousins, but it's also been made clear that they're not going to go contractually where the previous regime did twice, and give Cousins a fully guaranteed deal."

Hell, yes...being able to raise a QBOTF behind a successful signal caller who's working out the kinks in the system ahead of the kid? That's basically a dream scenario, and not one you get on bad teams, and/or by "tanking".Being able to pass the baton with high expectations...that's what the best clubs have done. New England didn't pull it off, but SF did with Montana/Young, those assclowns next door did it with Burt and Erin, and I really believe that we could do it with Kirk and a kid that learns behind him.
Hall doesn't look like he has "it", whatsoever. That brain ain't quick in game time. He'd better look into finishing up whatever degree was his minor. Dobbs is a good wildcat threat, maybe a trick play specialist...but I don't know if anyone believes in him being "the guy", anymore.
I'm hoping Kirk gets one more extension, the money wizards make the miracles happen so that JJ and others get paid, and we can go into 2024 feeling loaded for Bear (and Lion, and Puker, and so forth).

And there's the sticking points...years and guarantees. Geoff already mentioned Kirk doesn't want to be a bridge quarterback and will make the Vikings guarantee that 3rd year if that's the case. It's going to have to be a two way commitment on both sides and I just don't know that guaranteeing a 3rd year at big money makes sense for the Vikings.

At some point you need to find your QBOTF. We're definitely within the ballpark of Cousins aging out of the NFL, so you have to ask yourself, how is that transition going to happen. Are you going to go all in, with no QB plan beyond Cousins and just deal with the desperation then, or do you get your guy before you need him and roll the dice on him not only being the next guy, but also potentially an upgrade.
I think that unless you have that guy who's taking you deep into the playoffs every year, you need be trying to find the guy who can.
I like Cousins, but he's always been a good stats poor results guy and also, it's not a given that he'll even be the same Cousins back from his injury.

I dont resign Cousins, everyone is looking for this bump free ideal transition from the current to the future, unless you are GBay, that doesnt happen, maybe if they had put some sort of real effort into developing a replacement for Kirk, before it was time to move on from him they would have found that cheap guy they could groom for a few years, and if it didnt work out they had time, but the notion of Kirk being timeless had them not really putting much effort in and now we are behind the 8 ball. I find a bridge guy, accept that the team will take a step back for a year or two, but do so knowing that I am making a big swing for the future, but apparently the notion of not being 1 and done in the playoffs doesnt sit well with the owners or some fans so... fuck it, but if Kirk is the fuck it they choose, then I would like them to quit fucking around and go FULL FUCK IT, make a real run with the stars you have by adding more stars around them, quit fucking around with feel good free agents, I want play good free agents.
In my perfect scenario Kirk gets signed to a 1 year contract with a 2nd year option, Vikings draft a future QB in the top 10.
What will really happen is Kirk gets signed to a 3 year deal and no QBs taken from this great class, maybe another 4th or 5th rounder. Its just how they roll.

I think the bigger factor here with Kirk is are we a team that can be a Super Bowl contender this year or next, if so then it is worth going all in on Kirk, however based on what we have seen with this team even the year when we went 13-4 is that they are not at the level of the elite teams. There are so many holes on this team and the patchwork job did not work. With investing that money in Kirk, we are probably going to continue to be a borderline team for the next 2-3 years, which is not necessarily an awful thing as many teams do not get to that level, but would sure be nice to be a true contender, which is not something we have seen in a very long time.
