NFL Draft Talk
Thought we could make a general draft discussion thread with the Combine approaching. Just a few pre combine thoughts I had while digging in on some early evaluations;
- There could be as many as 7 cornerbacks going in the 1st round. While I don't see any elite, Patrick Surtain type's, the position is deep and talented. I'd be pretty upset if the Vikings took a cornerback, but there will be some talented corners still on the board when our pick comes up.
- I absolutely love this group of linebackers. Drew Sanders, Noah Sewell, and the Simpson kid from Clemson all look like really good prospects who offer some scheme flexibility. Hicks won't be back for us and they still have a decision to make on Kendricks. It's possible all 3 of these guys are still on the board at #23 and would be really good picks.
- I've got Jalin Hyatt as my #1 WR in this class. He would be an absolute home run pick for us and give us a deep threat dimension this offense is sorely lacking. I'm going to be very curious how teams separate Johnston, Addison, Zay Flowers, and Smith-Njigba after that.
- Not a great crop of defensive lineman. I think we can find some scheme specific bodies with our mid round picks but otherwise need to be active in free agency. We are going to continue running this crap 3-4 and IMO all three down lineman positions need to be upgraded. A couple guys I'll be watching at the combine are Ika the nose tackle from Baylor (LSU transfer), Gervon Baxter from Florida, and Keeanu Benton from Wisconsin. All bigger bodies that fit our scheme and to me defensive line is the biggest position of need on this roster.
- My early overrated list: Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, and Paris Johnson.
- I'd be shocked to see the Vikings draft a QB. If we trade down and add more picks, then taking someone like Hendon Hooker and stashing him away for a year makes a lot of sense. I think it's far more likely we add a Sam Darnold in free agency or trade for someone like Zac Wilson on the low end.

That smile says, yeah I got a wife who will make more money, last longer in professional football, and never take a hit. I'd be smiling too! It sucks Ponder was a bust, but that entire QB draft class was a bust outside of Cam Newton who was the top overall pick and had major concerns himself coming in. Jake Locker, Gabbert, Andy Dalton, and Kaepernick. Just land mines everywhere. I wanted Mike Pouncey that year as we had a major need along the interior of our offensive line. I don't fault Rick for taking a swing at a QB and Ponder had a lot of good qualities coming in, but Bill Musgrave got ahold of him and the rest in history. Rick rebounded though in the second round taking Kyle Rudolph who turned into the greatest TE in team history and if we hypothetically had swapped the draft positions of Ponder and Rudolph, I don't think you'd get the same amount of vinegar relating to the pick.I remember @FSUVike calling "hell no" on Ponder for the longest while b4 the draft. I got nothing against the kid personally of course. And you're exactly right; the vitriol against the guy would be far less if was a 3rd or 4th rd pick. Probably where he should have been drafted.
And I think that smile @jargomcfargo was cause he knew he got to hand-off to #28 in his prime...
I would, the kid showed talent and potential in terms of tools, but he became to dependent on the read option with emphasis on the run part, the league took off the red jersey allowing him to be hit like a RB when QBs ran that play and he got dinged, he then flaked out and lost a ton of weight, making him a shadow of his former self and in a few short years went from a player that teams potentially feared ( or coveted ) to a player that was a non factor and eventually un-touchable... pretty much a bust. His passing game never really scared me, but he had the arm to make it lethal if he would have focused on that part of his game. but arm talent isnt the rare trait for QBs, its learning how to use that arm is what separates the elite from the the next jamarcus russell.
Colin Kaepernick HUGE HIT!!!!!!! - YouTubeStill one of my favorite plays ever, Harrison laying the wood on Crapernick. Fuck that guy..

Alabama's Bryce Young throws for NFL teams at pro day
Now, the star Alabama passer and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner is trying to convince NFL teams — the Carolina Panthers, in particular — that the Crimson Tide coach is right, from the combine to Thursday's pro day at his old practice facility.
''We think he's the best player in the draft,'' Saban said.
Young, who didn't throw at the combine, threw a scripted series of 50 passes mostly to former teammates before a large contingent of NFL coaches, scouts and executives representing all 32 teams. Young and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud are vying to be the first player taken on April 27.
''It was great to be back here throwing to my guys again,'' Young said. ''This was a really cool experience. I always dreamed of having a pro day and to be able to have it means a lot to me.''
The Panthers continued their quarterback tour of prospects for the No. 1 pick they acquired from Chicago in a trade. A dozen team officials, including owners Dave and Nicole Tepper, coach Frank Reich and general manager Scott Fitterer, took Young to dinner before taking in his pro day performance.
That doesn't mean they're tipping their hand. The Panthers did the same with Stroud this week and attended his pro day on Wednesday. The Panthers said on the team web site that they would head to see Kentucky's Will Levis throw on Friday, with Florida's Anthony Richardson having his pro day next Thursday.
Young described the dinner as "a big feeling-out process.''
''I was super honored with all that people that I met with,'' he said. ''We were able to talk about a lot of things on and off the field. I really enjoyed it.''
He said he hadn't set up any meetings with other teams yet.
Other head coaches present included Matt Eberflus (Chicago Bears), Mike McDaniel (Miami Dolphins), Dennis Allen (New Orleans Saints), Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks) and Mike Tomlin (Pittsburgh Steelers). There were also nine general managers present, according to Alabama.
Young threw passes at various distances to former Tide receiver Slade Bolden, fellow prospects tight end Cameron Latu and tailback Jahmyr Gibbs and current Alabama players Ja'Corey Brooks and Jermaine Burton. He threw on the move, under simulated pressure and after taking some snaps from center, which he didn't do all that much for the Tide.
His one obvious slip-up: A deep ball hit the ceiling in the indoor facility.
The most talked about issue facing Young is his size at 5-foot-10, 204 pounds. Beyond that, Saban said, ''There's really no negatives.''
''The only negative that anybody can bring is what is his height?'' the former Miami Dolphins coach said.
"Drew Brees was always the biggest nemesis Nick Saban ever had, whether it was at Michigan State when he was at Purdue or in the NFL. And he was 5-11-something. I don't think it's an issue. It wasn't an issue in his college career.
''And he's going to play against some of the same players in that league that he's played against in the SEC. We think he's fantastic.''
For his part, Young isn't getting into the ''Who's No. 1'' debate.
''I don't have an argument. I try to be myself,'' he said. ''I don't control where I'm picked, who picks me. I'll be grateful for whatever team takes a chance on me."
Alabama's other potential top-five pick, linebacker Will Anderson Jr., was on hand during pro day as a spectator, standing by his combine performance. He said his only team visit so far has been with the Houston Texans, who pick second and 12th and are also in the market for a quarterback.
Like Saban, Anderson doesn't feel Young's height will keep him from succeeding in the NFL.
''I don't think he's too short to play quarterback,'' Anderson said. "He's done a phenomenal job here at Alabama. I could put all faith in him to go out there and do what he needs to do.
''He's a great friend, great brother, great teammate. And I wouldn't rather have anybody else to be my QB on my team than Bryce Young.''

Bryce Young is a really good young man. I'm rooting for him.

ESPN has us taking Joey Porter Jr. at 23
I would be happy that pick.
Truth or disinformation? If Levis drops to 23, I think the Vikings pull the trigger.

NO WAY Levis drops to 23...
That would be reminiscent of Rogers.
No, I dont think Levis has that upside, but it would still be rather DeJa Vu.

Even if Levis falls out of the top 10 there is a gauntlet of teams that would grab him way before 23. I think we need to move up to the Jets(13) or Patriots(14) picks because the Pack are at 15 and then Washington who would love Levis at 16. I would think the Lions at 18 would draft him. Then the Buccs at 19 would take him. Seattle at 20 if they didn't take a QB at 5 would also be a team to draft Levis. No way he falls to 23. We would need to move up into that 13/14 pick range so about 10 spots.
The same goes for Herndon Hooker .... "IF" we do our due diligance and find him first round worthy and Levis is gone then we have to consider that same gauntlet of QB needy teams - IMO!

We all say "no way" but as PF reminds us, Aaron Rodgers fell. He was considered neck and neck with Alex Smith all the way up to draft day. Smith went 1st and Rodgers fell all the way to 24, mostly due to teams filling other needs, but also because of previous failures of QBs who played in the same system as Rodgers at Cal...and rumors of arrogance and entitlement. OK, those proved accurate. :-)Do I think Levis falls to 23? No, I wouldn't bet on it. But never say never.

The other side of the argument is that the Vikings aren't desperate for a QB. They already have a good one. Sure, we all want the QBOTF in the pipeline, and we all know if you wait until you ARE desperate, and end up reaching, bad things can happen (Ponder). Hopefully the Vikings intel on other teams' intentions is razor sharp.

Yes, this would be great timing to draft a QB (again due diligence) with a solid veteran in place for at least a year.

Thats an unrealistic expectation imo - especially with QB's.I dont know what the intentions of the Vikings were with Fields within their grasp, but I dont think anyone saw the Bears getting that bold and moving up to get em.

Agree, so if we have done our own razor sharp analysis (which is all you have control over) you have to carpe diem and move up and get your guy. If we think Hooker or a falling Levi is the guy then we are going to have move off 23 instead of wishful thinking.(I was one of the very few during the Fields draft that vocalized a move up for him if he fell down which he did, oh well we passed then, but I think this year is the perfect scenario to take the shot and sit behind Kirk for a year)

But I don't want to rely on Levi or even Hooker falling to 23. If we do our due diligence and think Levi or Hooker are first round talent, then we will need to act on that and not just "hope" they fall to 23 - IMO.
Thats an unrealistic expectation imo - especially with QB's.I dont know what the intentions of the Vikings were with Fields within their grasp, but I dont think anyone saw the Bears getting that bold and moving up to get em.
You don't think we dodged a bullet there? You regret not moving up for Fields?
Jury is still out, right?
Fair enough. He still has a chance. He improved a bit last year, but I think that's mostly because he became more of a threat running the ball. I think you'd like to see that trend reverse though. He could be headed down a bad road if he becomes too dependent on that.
