Demond Claiborne working on rehab field

Early in practice still, but looks like rookie running back Demond Claiborne may be out of practice today. The sixth-round pick missed Saturday's practice like CB James Pierre. He's started on the rehab field with a trainer during the early portion here.

Demond Claiborne was back on the field for the Vikings’ walk-through this morning after missing Saturday’s practice. We’ll see if the rookie running back is back on the field this afternoon, but when he’s been on the field for the first week of camp, his impressive speed has stood out.

Claiborne ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash at the combine. He topped topped out at 23.79 miles per hour and recorded a speed of 21.79 mph at the 20-yard mark — the fastest by any running back that NFL Next Gen Stats has clocked in the past four years.

The trick, for Claiborne, is harnessing that speed in the Vikings’ offense.

I talked with Aaron Jones about that today, for a story later this week on Claiborne. He said one of the toughest things for a rookie running back to learn in the NFL is how to read gaps in the offensive line.

“You may see the whole opening, and you kind of want to take it right now,” Jones said. “You’ve got to continue to run with your block or set them up because if you take the whole too fast, they’re just coming off the backside. But if you stretch a little bit, the hole’s still gonna be there, and now you’re putting those defensive players in the offensive linemen’s laps where they can start to catch them. Some of it’s just the helmet stripe: you see the hole, you go over and turn your helmet, and as soon as they see that, they know you’re coming back [the other way]. So it’s just those minute details. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a rookie or you’re in year 12; it happens to all of us.”

So, how does defensive coordinator Brian Flores feel about the team's current depth at edge rusher?

Flores said the next few padded practices "will tell us a lot" about where their depth stands, adding "we'll see how that plays out."

The Vikings traded edge rusher Jonathan Greenard to the Eagles this offseason and did not add a veteran.

"I like all the guys on the roster," Flores said. "Sit here and talk about Dallas [Turner] and Gink [Andrew Van Ginkel], I think we know those two, but Eric [Wilson] has played on the edge, [rookie Jake] Golday has played on the edge, Ty [Ingram-Dawkins] has played on the edge, [Tyler] Batty's played on the edge; Bo Richter is having a good camp. We've got guys and they're all hungry to learn and hungry to improve. We'll see how that plays out. We're always having conversations about everyone on the roster. Feel good about where we're at there, and yeah -- these next few days will tell us a lot, I'll say that."

James Pierre expected to participate in individual drills

Cornerback James Pierre is stretching with the team as practice opens. Pierre missed Saturday’s practice, but defensive coordinator Brian Flores said earlier today that Pierre is expected to participate in individual drills today and that whatever he's dealing with is “short-term.”
