2024 Senior Bowl
Vikings defensive coach Daronte Jones interviewed in Mobile. Asked who stood out to him:
Quinyon Mitchell, CB
Chau Smith-Wade, CB
JD Bertrand, LB

LOL. I was just watching one earlier this week and was thinking the same thing.... I was looking for some reason to put him back as my guy to take at 11 like I he was a month ago. IIRC the montage was about 8 minutes long and there were about 2 designed runs as the last 2 clips. Part of the issue with him is when he runs its not really jukey, he is more straight line guy, and when he rolls out he is typically always going to be looking to throw over the defense that is coming up to take him, ala Mahomes.

I like Penix but he looks so awkward throwing the ball. His feet seem like they are all over the place. As long as the ball gets to where he's throwing it, I guess I don't care how awkward he looks. The Michigan game made me think that his weird footwork might really show up when he is under pressure. But I have not seen enough of him under pressure to be certain. One bad game is not enough to sour me on Penix. Some teams may not consider drafting him early because of his injury history. He is also older than ideal. I may prefer JJ, but he needs to sit for at least a year.
I wish I knew how much of what we saw from Penix against Michigan was him being rattled vs him dealing with his injury. He is just so damn accurate and poised ita hard to not want to see how he grows as a pro.

Penix looked like he finally faced a great defense and he fell apart. He didn’t know what to do…He couldn’t adjust…he frose….and his abysmal decision making got him hit and hurt.
That game exposed him. He’s weak and will absolutely crumble under pressure. He’s the opposite of Joe Burrow

I don't know whether Penix's lack of runs is a good thing or a bad thing. You obviously want a QB with the speed to escape. But you don't want one of those QBs who's going to constantly take off before the pocket collapses. He sure as hell isn't that. This, along with his accuracy despite a whacky motion which could be improved, is one of the things that keeps me intrigued by Penix.

Agreed, its the accuracy that makes him so compelling. You got an accurate qb who can process quickly?
Thats a good start right there.

and has shown a willingness to hang in the pocket and make the throws despite pressure.1 concern I have in the back of my mind, his OL was stellar, their run game was great most of the time, he took his share of hits, and saw intermittent pressure over the last year and was awesome right up to that championship game. granted he was playing PAC12 football and not SEC, but he looked like what I wanted to see in a QB ( expect the quicks in tight quarters, I havent seen him really juke and jive defenders like I would like to see, especially since our IOL is still a mess ) The kid has poise, leadership, makes any throw you ask and does it with touch and authority when necessary, but his short area quickness and processing speed are a concern for me, until Michigan forced him to really disect pre snap, he typically was able to go through his reads and make plays as needed, but when it got heated he struggled (although experience should fix that )
I just stopped reading info from the Senior Bowl as the articles continue to contradict themselves.

Shrine game probably doesn't deserve its own thread, so I'll just put it here. Tua's brother and Frank Gore's son among standouts. Keep in mind Brock Purdy and Ivan Pace Jr. played in the Shrine.

Penix electing not the play in the Senior Bowl today. Seems odd he would want to "rest his case" on a poor title game followed by an underwhelming week in Mobile.
Michael Penix Jr. was due to start for the National team in the Senior Bowl. He has decided not to play. Bo Nix will play only a couple of series. Sam Hartman will handle the bulk of the snaps. https://t.co/9gle7WX7zz

Spencer Rattler out there trying to be seen. He's an enigma: a 5 star QB out of high school, some thought might be a generational pick in the Draft after his 2020 season, he's never reached that high since then. He's got a big arm, is mobile and can throw on the run or in the pocket. Short at 6' 0". He locks into initial reads and looks, the cerebral part of the game challenges him. Had a nice 2023 but scouts think that might be his ceiling.

So in spot where he needed to take the stage and show his heart, he turned into a shrinking Penix.

JJM's the big unknown. Or at least it seems that way to me.
Oh and btw, both Ponder and Mond were Senior Bowl MVPs.

How do you feel about all the draft eligible players who skipped their school's bowl game (such as Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Joe Alt, Laiatu Latu and Caleb Williams)? That, to me, is far more damning than skipping an all-star game where you are not working with your teammates or coaches. Though I agree that skipping the all star game buys into the Penix narrative.

I think McCarthy will end up as QB4 and may get drafted a lot higher than many think. Personally I think him behind Kirk for a year or two would be perfect.

It's not about me. I really couldn't care less. But I do think his decision, like the bowl game decisions you mention, will rub some in the NFL the wrong way. It's just surprising to me he would make that decision, considering that his last two public appearances (the title game and his week in mobile) were less than flattering. The game was an opportunity to remove a bit of that bad taste and he elected to sit.
