Is this a new injury? Or the knee injury that kept him from playing in the playoffs last season?

Same knee. Non contact injury, just running.I just watched the video on ESPN... it looks like he tried to plant and cut to avoid contact along the sidelines and he went down awkwardly. I'm no doctor, but I wouldn't be surprised if he tore a ligament or two the way it looked.
That sucks. I'm kind of hoping they go after Cutler. Maybe they check out Kaepernick.

Now they are saying its still very possible he has season ending knee surgery.

Ouch
Sounds like no structural damage, but after two injuries in the same knee, and neglecting to get offseason surgery to stabilize the knee, it's unlikely he will just let this one go. If he gets the surgery, he's out for the year.
Dolphins will probably bring in a backup, but they've made Matt Moore the highest paid backup in the league for a reason. It'll be interesting to see what they do.
Jay Cutler - QB - Free AgentThe Miami Herald reports the Dolphins and coach Adam Gase "personally" have reached out to "retired" QB Jay Cutler since Ryan Tannehill suffered a potentially year-ending knee injury.
In 2015 as the Bears' offensive coordinator, Gase managed and manipulated Cutler in the same way he did with Tannehill last season. In arguably one of the best years of his career, Cutler threw 25 touchdown passes to only 11 interceptions under Gase, and Gase parlayed their success into the Dolphins' head-coaching job the very next year. ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported Thursday that Cutler would indeed be willing to come out of retirement to reunite with Gase, and an "industry source" told the Miami Herald the same thing. Cutler currently has a broadcasting job with FOX.
