Iloka to Minny
Whoa. Free-agent safety George Iloka is on his way to Minnesota, and it appears likely he signs with the #Vikings today, per @RapSheet and me. Mike Zimmer connection from #Bengals days. One of the NFL’s best defenses about to get even better?
Of course I like the move, but I'm starting to feel knots in my stomach a bit. I feel like we're doing the "dream team" thing. The dream team thing has backfired on a lot of teams in the past.

Our defense was already stacked (albeit we did still have some weaknesses- at least weaknesses for us; other teams would probably be pretty happy with our "weaknesses"). The biggest "weakness" that actually has a chance of limiting our success is OL. But Zim doesn't seem to care about helping the offense as much as he cares about making sure that "his" defense is the greatest ever. That would be great if he were the Defensive Coordinator. But he's the head coach. And, in the end, his legacy will be about W-L's- and that includes W's in the Super Bowl.About the only "good" thing about this move (besides the obvious upgrade) is that it will keep the "15-yard penalty at any moment" Sendejo off the field. With the new rules, I think Sendejo is going to be a liability.
I am going to like this post and call it out at the same time. I agree that the new rules really dont play well with what has allowed Dejo to stick in this league and that is his hitting style, he is not going to fare well with the helmet rules being enforced much greater IMO.
however your taking a shot at Zim for grabbing a significant upgrade at the position (without knowing the costs) are a little over the top. remember it was under Zim that they went out and spent about 16 million on 2 FA ol upgrades last year, and he may very well be willing to do the same for the OL, but can you name any available upgrades that he is not looking at? I cant because they just arent out there.
Its official: he's a Viking, just reported. One year deal.

I disagree. I highly doubt that "Zim doesn't seem to care about helping the offense..." has any truth to it. If a solid veteran guard was surprisingly released, I am sure we would have been all over it. But I don't see how this hurts us at all. Upgrade the deep safety, taking away the one liability. I really doubt the money is going to be that different, I could be wrong on that. IMO he signs a 1 year deal like Richardson.
Exactly. I am concerned about our OL, but it's not as if George Iloka and Tyron Smith were both cut Monday and Zimmer demanded the team ignore the offensive lineman just to fatten up his defense. Iloka is a bonus that fell into our lap, as it sure seems he is choosing the Vikings without making other visits and trying to start a contract bidding war.If they can trade Sendejo for any decent OL (maybe the Chargers would send us Michael Schofield?), this turns into a double win. I'm personally unsure if Sendejo has much value outside Minnesota, but I sure hope I am proven wrong.
And I'm not sure Iloka is just here on a 1-year deal. Read some of his past comments about Zimmer and it's clear they have a strong relationship. He picked the Bengals over Zimmer 2 years ago and Cincinatti dumped him; I bet he regrets turning Zimmer down and is now hoping to stay with the coach he loves.
Sendejo missed quite a bit of time this summer didn't he? What was his injury? I just see this move as shoring up the weakest spot on a very strong D.
Wonder how much the $$ was for? I Ilokla the presumed starter at saftey or does Dejo keep his job? I'd expect some significant rotation? What a crazy signing this late in FA.
Kirk Cousins, Sheldon Richardson and George Iloka in free agency.
Kendricks, Hunter, and Diggs resigned.
Who'da thunk it? Not me...

in what way would Dejo be a better S than Iloka? If this system is still run the same as it was in Cincy then I have to think GI is the man and Dejo is trade bait or at least on the salary chopping block to stay here. This will be interesting with Harris still looking servicable (and cheap) and also one or two of the younger guys looks like they might be a good cheap alternative as well. (not sure what is going on with Kearse, I dont recall seeing him out there this preseason.)
Lots of roster moves left to go before we get concerned about this signing coming at the expense of the offensive line. Let's see how all of this plays out and who is still left standing at the end. Besides Sendejo, you still have veterans in Newman, Robison, and Sherrells all making over $1 million this year that could be purged. Hopefully we can keep all of them for our run this year but I doubt Sendejo survives.
Read on nfl.Com it's a one year deal so probably on the cheap

It’s nice to see free agants like this wanting to come to Minnesota. Feels good for a change.
@"greediron" said:8 million guaranteed is not top dollar range, but its hardly something to sneeze at, especially when you factor how much help he will get from this surrounding unit. its hard for us to think about, but this team and this D especially is somthing FA's should be taking a discount to be part of if they are looking to be FA's again.@"JimmyinSD" said:for a starting 3Tech, I think it was rather cheap. Vikings bag S George Iloka with one-year deal

Iloka flirted with the Raiders and Vikings, where both of his former defensive coordinators now coach. He joins a Minnesota defense that is completely stacked at all three levels and gives the team a third safety for sub-packages. Iloka is big enough where he could also play some dime linebacker. Iloka's addition isn't expected to have an impact on Andrew Sendejo's job.
@"Viking1987" said: Read on nfl.Com it's a one year deal so probably on the cheapAlthough I like this development and think both Iloka and Zimmer would like to see it continue beyond 2018, this is smart for the Vikings. There is always a chance Cincy released him due to some legitimate concern, like health or declining play, so we can audition him for the year.

how can this not impact Dejos job? are they honestly going to pay him 3.5 million to sit on the bench except for ST? unless i am overestimating GIs ability or we are all seriously underestimating Dejo, this should be a a week to 2 weeks and Iloka is starting.

But he could also be more in the coverage LB mold as well. Dunno. I think he takes Sendejo's spot and puts him on the cut list.
