McCarthy to get his shot in New York
JJ is going to get his shot, very glad for him.....👍🤘
The Giants are planning to soon move forward with JJ McCarthy as their QB1, per @RapSheet.

New York might give McCarthy one more week to prepare behind Jameis Winston before becoming the full-time starter by Halloween. pic.twitter.com/8vUYObAfyM

He's only a rental in NY for the rest of this season. His 5th year option is due in May & it's $26M. If the NYG pick it up it's guaranteed even if he's waived at the cut down. No way are the NYG doing that. That would mean that they're giving up on Dart.
It might include next year too. No, they're not going to pay his 5th year option, but it doesn't mean they can't just let him play out his rookie deal, which includes all of 2027. He'll then be a free agent in 2028 and we'll see what happens.

If the offense is a little more suited to him and if he finally just frees his mind for YOLO ball, he can sling it. Might be fun, but I do think the odds are against that. Anyway, I think he's going to start this Sunday. 🤘

And they have the option of doing what the Packers did with Love and extend him for one year before they need to decide on his fifth year option. It was for more than the 5th year option, but less was guaranteed and it included incentives. Giants could do the same thing with JJ McCarthy and potentially get him for less of a cap hit and avoid it all being guaranteed. Gives them another year to evaluate him and see if Dart can stay healthy. He will be on his rookie deal yet so they won't have that much committed to their QB room between Dart and JJM.

To be honest, I don’t think there’s a huge gap between Dart and JJM. I think most of the issues he’s had have just been KOC and him trying to swallow the elephant whole rather than taking his development one bite at a time. I think if the Giants give him the same system as Dart, they’ll probably get pretty similar results. Obviously, just a gut take on that and we’ll see how it all plays out.

I have not seem enough of Dart to say this with total confidence, but it appears that Dart is more accurate on the typical, easy, run-of-the-mill passes. Those always seemed like 50-50 propositions for JJM. That just is not good enough. And when he missed Price wide open in the endzone this preseason and said that is one of those plays where you make some and you miss some, it left me shaking my head. I'm not sure he really believes that, but he said it. (Like Nix saying playing good or playing bad is just a narrative that we make up.)
There is only one QB I can think of who really improved his accuracy after entering the NFL - Josh Allen. But he is an outlier. While I wish him well, I don't see JJM following in Josh Allen's footsteps. (And personally, I really like JJM and hope he has a good career as an NFL QB.)
It was a good situation for him last week, it was a hurry up offense his entire time in there, which I think he works best under as there is less thinking and just reacting. He threw more layered passes in the quarter than he did his entire time here, so that was definitely promising for him. Maybe it was a wake up call and he is actually listening to his coaches there. That being said he had a pretty low completion rate, he had a lot of high throws some that his WRs made great catches on and he had one interception and could have easily been 2 more that were dropped. Will be interesting how he progresses. Good for him if he gets it tougher. It is not like we never let a QB go and he went on to have a MVP like year and win the Super Bowl 😀
Maybe he needed to get away from our QB coach, Josh McCown? If I recall our all world QB coach was coaching in Carolina for Bryce Young’s disaster of a rookie season!😇

He isn't some modern day Marino now after that game. Definite prevent defense. Just simply trying not to lose. That defense allows someone with mental issues on the field to simply just throw the ball and play their game. JJM seems to do better when he doesn't think. But I don't think this was some sort of lightbulb moment. He will go back to who he is.
Just not sure why some still try and dog on him and make digs at him, however. JJM is gone. No reason to continue to throw shade.

So, which one of the Mod Squad has been throwing shade? There really isn’t none in this thread.

I mean I don't know much about Josh McCown other than he seems like a good dude and has strong Christian faith. But since we lost Udinski prior to the 2025 season, it sure seems like our QB room has suffered.

Yes, & Trevor Lawrence has flourished…!
I still believe pretty strongly that McCarthy will be a good NFL QB eventually. Maybe even great. He looked good the other day, let's see where it goes from here.
I think KO is a great coach and I'm glad he's the Vikings coach, but I agree with @medaille and others in this thread- the Vikings bungled McCarthy's development badly and there's little reason to think this regime is going to somehow get patient and develop a rookie QB. If they're inclined to draft one next year, it better be one of these grey-haired NIL Covid QB's and not a raw kid with upside.
McCarthy was made of glass when he was here and that will be the copium if he goes on to do well, but casting him off for a 5th round pick after 10 starts is rough any way you slice it.
No the coaches didnt do everything right and he missed Udinski more then I think most fans realize.
But when u miss 20 something out of 30 some starts? The buck starts and ends with that.
Teasley moved him cause something was going on in the building and my guess is that something wasnt good. Otherwise, why give up on a young prospect on a rook contract?
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

Label it what you will, but its fact. Honestly, I didnt even want to go this deep on JJM at this point. Sometimes the fingers wont listen to the brain.

They don’t miss Udinksi, they miss competent QB play. Just a tough reality. The Vikings have a very good coaching staff all across the board, and you’ve seen it in this 5–0 start. Just expect that kind of consistency. Murray looked confident to me for the first time last game , it can only portend good things.
I’m optimistic, but I need two more games to give a true prediction about the season for me.

Yah, you and I disagree on Udinski.
I think he was a really important confidant/mentor/safe place for young JJ and was missed by the kid - a lot.
Did that have something to do with what was potentially going on in the bldg a year later? When they decided 9 had to go?
Who knows???

Always like your insight, my man… But a genius is only as good as his QB in the NFL.

I’ve said it before and maybe it bears repeating.
2nd preseason game, McCarthy injured his ankle. We are told had it been a regular season game he would/could have gone back in.
Preseason game 3 comes and McCarthy is announced as starter and almost simultaneously is announced as unavailable.
I think that was the point the Rubicon was crossed. Teasley had zero investment in McCarthy and just witnessed a player who profoundly needed reps basically say “naw, I’m good”.
If you want to say KO failed McCarthy, that’s fine. But, McCarthy flat out quit on the Vikings.
The funniest part of this whole deal is McCarthy being elevated to near mythical status based on garbage time numbers against the 31st ranked D’s backups.
And now, my fingers will obey my brain on this subject.
