After Minnesota took Jake Golday 41st overall, Iowa C Logan Jones and Florida C Jake Slaughter were selected in that same round:

It was a "scrimmage-style" practice, coach Kevin O'Connell said beforehand, featuring bleacher benches on the sideline and a mock halftime to simulate a game for the many starters who are not expected to play in Friday's preseason finale in Denver.

"I might as well have a rep counter in my hand," O'Connell said, "trying to get a certain amount [of reps] per drive. Making sure these guys start feeling what it's like to play the volume of snaps."

Here are some observations from the action:

• Quarterback J.J. McCarthy did not practice due to an ankle injury suffered in Saturday's preseason loss to Baltimore. The Vikings are "trying" to get him prepared to start Friday against the Broncos, O'Connell said. The team is targeting a Week 1 return to practice for both safety Theo Jackson and rookie offensive tackle Caleb Tiernan, a third-round pick, according to O'Connell. Both players remained sidelined during Wednesday's practice. Jackson has a chance to practice next week, O'Connell said. Jackson suffered an apparent leg injury in Thursday's joint practice with the Ravens. Tiernan sustained an ankle injury in the Vikings' preseason opener against the New York Giants.

• Quarterback Kyler Murray got a heavy workload with the starters, but it was star receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison who got their sidelined hyped up with impressive catches. From near the goal line, Murray made a strong anticipation throw over the middle to Jefferson for a touchdown. On the next play, a blown whistle seemed to indicate a sack called for the defense, but Murray made another impressive throw while under pressure that Jefferson caught with one hand in the back of the end zone. During the next series, Addison's toe-dragging, sideline grab sparked debate from both sidelines of whether it was a phenomenal catch or out of bounds; officials ruled it a catch. Murray also connected with Jefferson in the red zone to set up a touchdown throw to tight end T.J. Hockenson over linebacker Blake Cashman.

• Cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. ended Murray's day with an interception, plucking an off-target pass that landed behind Jefferson during a corner route toward the sideline. Murray had a couple off-target passes, including one that landed near no one due to an apparent miscommunication; another to Josh Oliver missed the wide-open tight end down the seam. Edge rusher Tyler Batty dropped a would-be interception off Murray in a previous series.

• There were many starters vs. starters reps, but quarterback Carson Wentz had a rough stretch when he commanded the second-team offense against the top defense. Defensive tackle Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins deflected a Wentz pass at the line, defensive tackle Jalen Redmond stripped the ball from Wentz's hands in the backfield, and then cornerback Isaiah Rodgers swatted away the final Wentz pass of that period. Wentz also had an inaccurate ball to receiver Tai Felton, who dropped the pass that was thrown behind him.

• Kicker Will Reichard converted 5 of 6 field goals; he made 3 of 3 kicks with rookie punter Brett Thorson holding and 2 of 3 kicks with veteran punter Johnny Hekker holding.

It might just be me, but listening to O’Connell now talk about JJ and I just hear….well, he seems tired of talking about him. I’ve said this before many times, obviously, but I just feel like the organization for all intents and purposes, is done with McCarthy. The hyper focus has to be on Kyler Murray.

I think the Wilfs have never been more excited about their head coach and general manager. The team loaded up on and invested in really good assistant coaches/front office people under Teasley. The time is definitely now with Kyler. I have zero doubt that from top to bottom the organization believes they can compete in a big way this year. They are acting that way. I mean, lets say KAM had a big say in drafting JJM, doesn't it seem plausible that Teasley/KOC would like their own hand-picked piece of clay?

The bottom line is I think from the players to everyone in that organization they want to show that last year was just a fluke
