Report: Kyler Murray will visit the Vikings on Thursday
Quarterback Kyler Murray is currently a free agent. That may not last long.
John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM in Phoenix reports that Murray will visit the Vikings on Thursday.
From Gambadoro’s tweet: “A starting spot is a priority, and Minnesota does offer that and a deal could be done in the next 24 hours. But Murray and his camp are expected to explore several options as a backup in 2026 for teams that could need a starting QB in 2027 over the next 24 hours.”
One team that has interest in Murray as a backup for 2026, we hear, is the Rams. And with Matthew Stafford on a year-to-year plan, L.A. could need a starter by 2027.
Still, as immediate starting options go, the Vikings present the best opportunity. Unless the Steelers snap out of their Aaron Rodgers 2.0 fever dream.
Murray’s appeal, beyond his skills, comes from his availability at only $1.3 million for 2026. He should insist on a no-tag clause for 2027, so that he’ll have maximum leverage if he plays in 2026 like he did in the early years of his career.

Kyler Murray plans to talk via Zoom to teams that may have a QB need in 2027
Yes, quarterback Kyler Murray will visit the Vikings on Thursday — his agent, Erik Burkhardt, has confirmed that to NFL Media.
But here’s the interesting twist, via Tom Pelissero of NFL Media: Burkhardt told him that Murray plans to meet by Zoom on Wednesday night and Thursday with executives from three to five teams that potentially have a quarterback need in 2027.
Possibilities (as we see it) include the Jets, the Steelers, the Browns, the Falcons, and the Rams.
It gives Murray an opportunity to get a head start on free agency next year, which underscores the likelihood he’ll sign a one-year, $1.3 million deal for 2026.
That makes a no-tag clause critical. He needs to be able to hit the market next year, if for whatever reason he plays well and doesn’t get a solid offer to stick around with the Vikings, or whoever he signs with.
The Vikings continue to be the clear favorite. There’s really no one else. And, as of last season near the trade deadline, the Vikings were one of the teams in which Murray was interested.

One of the reasons I think KOC is interested is:
Some of the league figured out some of his route combos in down and distance play calling.
KM would move the pocket outside with new routes to become a more unpredictable offense.

I see that, but you could do that with JJM or most any QB if its by design. Murray's run around until something comes open approach isnt typically by design, its him trying to find an open throwing lMO. There is extending plays, and there is running around to be able to see plays. Problem with either is they often end up putting your blockers in bad positions and results in holding calls or excessive QB hits as the dline can see and react, the oline has no idea where the QB is heading next amd struggle to react in time.
I like a little mobility to keep the D guessing, and to move a little, but not a QB that relies on his legs as that IMO is not a long term way to get success from the position, especially now with 290# DL running in the mid 4s.

How does this make any sense at all? The whole idea is to show out in 2026 to get back to the big money in 2027. How does he do that on the bench? Explain this to me as one might to a young child...or a golden retriever.

Only way to explain it is over exposure to the desert sun, heat stroke can make people say really irrational shit.

Agreed.
If you are Murray, you sign here for what the Vikings can offer to improve your game + you may like it here (a lot.)
In fact, you may love playing with Jettas, Addison, TJH, Darrisaw et al and want to sign long-term?
I would think playing (and playing well) here in 26 is more impactful vs holding a clip-board for Stafford in LA.
On top of that, the Vikings may want to retain you longer term depending on how 26 unfolds. So in essence you created a strong mkt for yourself. THIS is the elephant in the room and why it could mean the end of JJM in MN.
But let's see if he even signs here first.
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

Once upon a time Kyler Murray had an agent who fed the media a lot of nonsense, like every other agent. The end.
Pelissero seems to be really tied in to Murray's agent and reported once the news first broke about him coming here last week that while most likely he signs here that since he has never been a FA, he would still want to talk to other teams to get an idea of landscape in the event he is a free agent next year, in essence he wanted to take advantage of the window to get familiar with some other teams. The plan was still to sign here. Yesterday Schefter and Rapoport began to report the exact same thing with Pelissero reiterating his earlier statement and said he talked to his agent and he still intended to sign here. Smart move by his agent, if things go well here and he is offered an extension they already have an idea of what is out there and if it doesn't go well they have laid some groundwork with other teams.

But dad, doesn't this require an audience of idiots?
I see this going down this way.... Murray signs on a wink and nod deal that he will compete with JJM for the QB1, but we know its not really going to be an open competition, he is here to start. I expect him to do his usual and the team has another 1 and done, hell maybe 2 playoff wins even, but it will largely be the playmakers and the D, and not the QB position that delivers the success, but since its Murray we get a couple 3-4 JJM appearances that show that he has made small improvements, but not really enough to say he is the future which makes that 5th year decision next spring really a toss up. In the meantime, Murrays camp wants a multiyear $50M+ after "his" successful season which only further confuses our front office, but ultimately they decide to let him hit FA and lose out on him, are picking in the late 20s so a real shot at one of the top QB candidates is off the table, and JJM is no more game seasoned than he is today.
in the short term.... weeeeeee, it will be fun, but in a few years we will be looking at this as a wasted year IMO, as we arent a real SB contender, thus we waste a year of Jeffersons prime ( just with a different QB ) and we are no closer to knowing who will be QB1 in 2028.

Anything can happen in the NFL but I agree with you for the most part. The most likely outcome if the Vikings sign Murray is that Kyler plays well and the Vikes get the privilege of becoming one of the teams paying a non-elite QB huge money. JJM traded :(

I believe I have said this in various ways across the board numerous times. Vikings just keep doing the same crap over and over and over...Just have to find the correct way to kick you in the nads at the end of the season and for the future.
Two scenarios...If Murray lights it up and JJ takes another year to perfect his skills...Next year, Murray will be gone chasing the big contract and most money and we'll still have JJ at a young age. If JJ lights it up, then we'll know he's the quarterback of the future and Murray still goes after that big contract & money.
The organization knows this, the coaches knows this, Murray knows this and JJ knows this...Seems like everyone wins one way or another.

I dont see them overpaying Murray, he is to injury prone and his playing style doesnt typically translate to later career success, I see them letting him walk, but then having to blindly take on the 5th year of JJMs deal, but still having to grab another 1st round QB in next years draft not knowing if JJM will be viable yet.

Desert sun wears down the body also.

Both Murray and JJ have trouble staying on the field. I'm guessing we'll see a fair amount of both in 2026.
Lofl!
The inter webs can be awfully funny sometimes.

Still is. Look at the name tags on the two lockers.. They just put COD stuff in JJ's locker space.

Just saying, it's not a good look/message sent to McCarthy, IMO.
While I realize this is a business, I truly am not understanding the disrespect McCarthy is getting from all over the place.
I hope McCarthy sees this and it fuels him to freaking light the NFL on fire this year. This stuff makes me sick. The kid has only won wherever he has gone and it's just a matter of time for him to continue that here in MN.
