we've got our QB on a rookie deal and Addison is still on his,  and we are 60 million over for next year ( sure some of that will take care of itself,  but there will also be deals that need to be added to that as well so I find it unlikely that they are able to pay 2 WR north of 30 per year,  especially when in a few years they will have to start to factor in JJMs next deal ( knock on wood)

How many WR2s in the NFL do you think are 1st round draft picks? Its usually 2nd round or later. I don't see why a 3rd round draft pick would be that crazy unusual for a NFL WR2 potentially.

No of course it's not. To say otherwise it just being belligerent. That said, I'd be surprised if Felton weren't redshirted in 2025. There may not be a better group of four receivers in the NFL...and he's a rookie who needs to work on his routes.

But look at it this way, we can look forward to the same folks calling him a bust this time next year without considering the circumstances of why he didn't play, much like Turner, Nailor, et al

What I'm far more interested in is what this team's plan is for Nailor and Addison. Nailor is in a contract year and Addison is eligible for an extension at the end of this season. I don't think we can keep both, and I don't think we can afford to lose both. I know many have already written off Addison due to how much we're paying Jefferson, but I'm not convinced that's a foregone conclusion considering the team's 3-year window and what is probably a strong desire among leadership to keep the band together for all three years.

Not there is ever a good time for it, but a DUI heading into the first year you are eligible for generational $$??

Well, that just doubly stoopid.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

I'm pretty sure that barring another off-field issue, KOC will pound the table to keep Addison. I don't know how they'll make it work since they already are spending like mad in free agency in part to make up for the lack of drafted starters. But the cap is more flexible than people sometimes think, there are lots of accounting tricks available to them.

The Bengals gave Joe Burrow 5/$275M two years ago. His cap hit is $46M this year. They then gave Chase 4/$160 this spring, then gave Tee Higgins 4/$115 a week later. They also have a highly paid Orlando Brown Jr at LT and a highly paid Edge in Trey Hendrickson. So it can be done if you're willing use lower-salary, league-average players at positions of lesser importance. Of course they're struggling to extend Trey Hendrickson and may have to trade him.

Right now I just want to have that problem.

Well yeah anything's possible.  But I like to instead think about what's probable.  This team hasn't said it's replacing Addison, who is worlds of talent beyond Felton, an overdrafted (IMO) 3rd rounder.  They may sign Addison to a big extension and be happy to have JJM throwing to the best 1/2 combo in the league.  That's what I would do.

And realistically the third target on this team is Hockenson.  I expect Nailor to head to free agency given a chance, cuz if he really is the potential WR2 that people here keep claiming, he should certainly want to go get many millions more for that than he can get mostly riding pine in purple, right?  Then maybe Felton, who they said specifically they drafted to return kicks, will have a shot at WR3 aka Target4.

But in the end I don't think it's that important an issue aka who are the bottom tier targets on a team with Jefferson and Addison and Hockenson.  Maybe draft a guy whose name ends in "son", then I'll be a believer in his amazing future in purple. ;)

we've been there,  what they are doing is not much different that the Vikings  in the past, over pay a few positions and then suck at others.   They have won their division 3 times in the last 10 years,   as have the Vikings.  I dont see what they are doing as some sort of benchmark of excellence or even competence.

Well yeah....that can be said about anything where 3 guys take up a giant portion of the cap space but it makes it so MUCH harder to do: find cheaper players to play well. You also need to Draft well.....KAM doesn't have a lot of starters from his drafts. Its a burden on the team big time. I don't know why Minnesota would hamstring themselves by paying Addison big time money for WR2. Not saying it won't happen, but I think its improbable and unlikely. The bottom line is you'll have to find a decent portion of the roster getting paid not much as there's no other alternative and that isn't optimal. The Vikings have a bunch of money tied up in the O-line as well.

I really really like Addison, but when you have Justin Jefferson, WR2 is an easier position to play as a byproduct. And you have to think about the cap moving forward.

Who's saying they're a benchmark of excellence? They're just a team who had a situation similar to the one we may have, in that they were fortunate enough to find excellent players at QB, WR1 and WR2. Can the Vikings learn something from this? What to do? What not to do? Because there aren't many teams like this. The Vikings now have two out of the three. I just want us to complete the trifecta and have the same, um, "problem." The biggest difference between the two teams is that we're opening our window; they're trying to extend theirs.

He's got Addison, the only real top tier starter he's drafted.  Addison, the guy everyone around here is eager to ditch lol.

Why would they, as you put it, hamstring themselves paying Addison?  That's easy.  First, KOC is clearly the big dog in this organization now and I'd put the odds of him very much wanting to keep/extend Addison at about 100%.

Second, is the organization that can't draft now going to sell the idea that they will ditch the only guy they've drafted who has really shown some high level ability?  I seriously doubt it, unless they want to look like idiots.  Yeah they can use a couple of off-field mistakes by a very young, green kid as an excuse, but if those are all that ever happen, they are just giving away a guy who has a big impact for what?  The development of Tai Felton?  That is ridiculous.

I really really like Addison, but when you have Justin Jefferson, WR2 is an easier position to play as a byproduct. And you have to think about the cap moving forward.

They have the best capologist in football, arguably.  They will probably end up like the Saints if they can't start drafting replacement level talent that plays cheap but meantime they will go the same route they went at the end of the Rick and Mike era - blow up that cap to win now (even though it didn't work for old Ricky and Mikey).

If they weren't flailing in the draft every year I'd say sure, find a cheap WR2, and get something for Addison in a trade.  I mean, it would not be my plan or choice but if they did it I'd nervously feel like this might work (or might blow up in their faces).  But with the way they draft now, any plan to replace a front line guy with a late round pick is fool's gold at best imho.

If you ask me to look in my crystal ball I'd say barring any more off-field incidents, it's about 85-90% they extend Addison at some point, probably after this season.   KOC will get what he wants and they will spend like crazy up until the day they have to extend JJM assuming he earns that extension.  Then things will change, perhaps drastically.

I agree with you on the reasoning for why the team will probably re-sign Addison, beyond his on field talent which is already considerable. Sticking with your winners is a safe, tried and true approach in most cases.

Personally, I'd hesitate to pay him a ton of money, but I think the team will see it differently and I'm fine with that too. He's an awesome wide receiver.

Well as fans we should hope for excellence and you said you were hoping to be where they are..
Im saying we've beem there numerous times over the 60+ years,   I want better.  Especially when it comes to using cap,  not managing the cap,  but allocating the cap and not overpaying for production.

Oy vey...no I'm saying I want JJM to turn out because I would like to have the same QB/WR/WR problem as them.

There's routine chatter here and elsewhere about dumping Addison. It looks plenty eager to me.

Saying the team has options and can figure them out is better than saying just cut guys regardless of their on-field contributions to save dough.

I would not look to the Brown family business model for any reason.

Based on how they're approaching year 1 of their window, I think the Vikings are going to be very aggressive in keeping this team as strong as possible through the 3-season window.

Addison is eligible for an extension this offseason, but that doesn't mean the Vikings have to extend him that early. If they exercise his 5th year option, they can keep him through the '27 season. 25, 26, 27. That's the window right there.

This is more the way I would look at it. Providing he stays clean off the field, I think they will try to keep him, within reason. The problem will be when he wants more money than is reasonable. I never forget the first words he said when he was drafted!

Its a strategy, not any eagerness to see a guy like Addison move on. The team can choose to keep Addison, but they'll have to compromise somewhere else and that's a fact. Possibly substantially. But it may be that they'll make the move you are debating (keeping him) and that's what KOC/KAM will want. I just don't personally think its probable....but never said impossible. Hell, it might be Plan A for all I know.
