... and bounce back from it in order to consider extending him.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently-- Would it be smart to extend Darnold now to something shorter and more manageable, versus potentially trying to outbid other teams for him on the open market in the offseason?

I've seen the question brought up here and my thought has been, let's just wait. There's no rush, it's only been 4 games, JJM looked great... It makes sense. But if he'd sign today for something like 2 years, $40M with an understanding we may trade him after year 1, would that be such a bad thing? It could wind up looking like a huge bargain as soon as a month from now. For reference, Baker had one good season in Tampa and signed a 3-year, $100M extension this past offseason. In other words, a two-year deal might be off the table come March. So there are pros to doing a deal now for sure.

But I realized if we signed him today and then the next week he has a dud, there would be absolute panic in the streets. It would be a very uncomfortable wait until the next game and then who knows what would happen. It's too scary to think about.

So I've decided I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other-- extend Sam soon or wait it out-- But I do feel like we HAVE to see Sam have a bad game (turnovers, lose, sacks, the whole 9) and come back the next week looking like Our Sam in order for me to fully have faith. Once he does that, I'm at peace with any decision. I should note I say this all as a huge, antsy, JJ McCarthy fan who would be excited to roll with him as QB1 next year as well.

Damn,

In spite of a rough day, I wish we would have found a way to win and get to 5 & 0 vs a Jets team giving us their best shot

Right, lol?  It wasn't a pretty win, but the defense played great, special teams were mediocre and had the cardinal sin of roughing the punter, and the offense struggled against a good Jets defense.  A win is a win.

We are 2 games ahead of the Lions, Packers, and Bears and it's only going to get worse for them.

It's funny fans are pissed at our HC for not calling plays that worked when the Vikings offensive players had plenty of miscues.

Darnold didn't play well.  Chandler isn't as good as Aaron Jones.  A very good OL had some penalties that wiped out Chandler's only big run and put us in some long down and distances at times.

Is Darnold untouchable now?

No, but apparently youve decided that KOC is? Maybe it was on Darnold, or maybe the Jets and last week the Packers are just slow starters and it no fault of the play calling that the O goes into a 2.5 quarter shell making what should be a laugher into a nail biter. Just seems that things get stagnant unless the score is close.

He's way more untouchable than Darnold lol

Go back and rewatch it.  It wasn't KOC throwing the ball and missing guys.  He wasn't dropping passes hitting him in the hands.  He wasn't getting flagged for penalties.

Dont need to, i would just be frustrated with the same plays again. Maybe it is Darnold playing hero ball, or maybe its just the plays being dialed up, but running Chandler into the back of the OL on first down wasnt helping. If the D doesnt score that TD, i have my doubts that the O would have been up to the task themselves. Thats 2 weeks in a row where the O looks good for a few drives early and then goes anemic leaving the D out there to much. I just would like to see the O put a team down and step on their throat, or at least find answer a score before the game is in doubt.

Here is the one thing that I am going to look for on-going re: Sam I Am...

He has some history of starting hot and then tailoring off. Vikes do too tbh.

I want to see how he does going forward. Are we going to have ghosts of Olde Sam? Or a new one re-crafted by coaching?

Detroit is a tough out and it'll be insightful too.

The nice thing about the Vikings so far is the fact they have a top notch offense and defense. The offense was far from top notch today, but the defense bailed them out.
Detroit is a very good team and may beat the Vikings after the bye, and they may not, but it wont matter. They are better than most NFL teams and will bounce back. I hear people talking about 2002. But this team is way better and I don't see them folding. This is the best team the Vikings have had in years!
It's all about winning, and that's what they are doing.

Sam stunk out the joint! Just what I wanted, ha. Ok not really, but we'll see how he bounces back. The extra time should help as well.

I'd attribute yesterday's near-loss to three things:

1. Darnold had by far his worst game as a Viking, against a very good defense.
2. Chandler isn't Jones just like Mattison wasn't Dalvin and Taylor wasn't Petersen. That's okay, Chandler is still solid. But our running game went to the sideline along with Jones yesterday, which was a bummer.
3. Our special teams beyond Reichard stinks. Bungled punts, roughing the kickers, just ugly.

Sam vs. the playcalling who knows. Either way the offense was bad. Aggressive at weird times. Missed throws. Missed open guys. Addison barely involved (and not looking great when he was). Did Nailor even get a target?

I'm excited to see how Sam bounces back! And I'll stick to my word. If he balls out next game then afterwards I'll be fully bought in and welcome any contract news that may come his way, despite my enormous JJM hype as well.

*deep breath*

5-0!!! Let's get healthy and keep this thing rolling. 5-0!!!!!!
