Who the Hell is Jalen Redmond?
He wasn't a draft pick. He wasn't among our class of UDFAs. He wasn't a free agent acquisition either. So I think a lot of us were surprised to see his name included on the final roster.
Former Sooner, 6-2-3/8, 291, 4.81 forty, signed with Carolina as a UDFA last year and was waived in camp. Went to the UFL and played well. Vikings must've been scouting him because they signed him the day after his UFL contract expired.
Tony Pauline scouted him at OU and wrote: "Athletic defensive tackle who goes very hard. Explosive, fires off the snap with a terrific first step, and possesses a closing burst of speed. Attracts a lot of attention in the middle of the line, effectively bends his knees, and works his hands throughout the action. Keeps his feet moving, holds his ground against double-team blocks, and plays through the whistle. Strong for his size."
More on Redmond from Dustin Baker HERE. Some pretty impressive preseason highlights below.

Good catch!!
Vikings DL has gone through some major personnel change this off-season.
Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
Sounds like his biggest weakness was staying sound.
Had a heck of a game yesterday, and the week before. Couple more things I read. Undrafted from Oklahoma, signed with Carolina, where he was waived with an injury designation in training before the Panthers even played a preseason game. Didn't sign anywhere else. Went to the XFL and starred. Vikings signed him the day after his contract with the XFL expired.
His combine was exceptional. This was the year of Jalen Carter and Calijah Kancey. Redmond's 40 time (4.81) ranked 2nd. His vertical, broad jump and three cone ranked 1st in a pretty good DT class.
Might have something here.

He shows up making plays, but was waived earlier in the year, pretty much after rosters had been set (game 4 or so?). I like him but haven’t looked at the film ?
Yep, he was the guy at the bottom of the roster they waived and placed on the practice squad when Hockenson returned to the roster. I kinda have a feeling he's not going to be that guy anymore. He's flashed too many times now to expose him IMO.
He's got to get rid of that #61 lol. Looks like a guy just called up from the practice squad. Glad he hasn't played like it though

and hes making an impact at a position that we sorely need to see step up on game day. Our DT squad isnt getting a consistent push, nor are they doing a quality job of making a wall in run defense. Phillips is a nice player for us, but he isnt the answer in the middle IMO.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?
Redmond becoming Purple payroll’s best bargain
Five of Cousins’ eight passes defensed came from front-seven players near the line of scrimmage.
Andrew Van Ginkel dropped a pick-six. Leading the way with a team-high two pass deflections was Jalen Redmond, a second-year tackle who went undrafted in 2023 and was out of football last year. Redmond, who makes the rookie minimum of $795,000, also had two tackles for losses of 9 yards on Bijan Robinson. Redmond has four TFLs in the past two games and six on the year, fourth best on the team.
One of his batted passes came on third-and-goal at the 2 with 15 seconds left in the first half. Redmond then opened the second half with a 4-yard TFL. “They just blocked me into the guy,” Redmond said. “The other was a nice swim move on the tackle. missed the tackle and I just cleaned things up.”

Carolina's inability to identify or develop talent has been a gift for us this year!
A subtle change took place along the defensive line against Atlanta when veteran defensive tackle Jerry Tillery was sent to the bench for second-year defensive tackle Jalen Redmond, who got his first NFL start and led the Vikings with two run stuffs while playing a career-high 39 snaps.
Redmond went undrafted in 2023 out of Oklahoma and, before joining the Vikings in June, played for the UFL’s Arlington Renegades.
“He’s been playing well,” defensive coordinator Brian Flores said, “and I’m a believer if you go with the hot hand, and you’ve been playing well and practicing well and you’re kind of moving in that direction, I think he earned himself a few more snaps. He did well in those snaps, so he’ll likely get some more snaps. And that’s just kind of, I think, a fair and right way to do things.”
