It is never a bad look to have two good QBs.  No one with any common sense will judge them harshly for not putting all their eggs in just the Penix basket, because we all know that rookies aren't guaranteed to succeed.

I agree the past two years I definitely wanted to see us draft a successor, seemed like we tried to do that last year with Richardson, although think we missed the boat with Levis.  In this case, the length of the contract with the guaranteed money combined with Penix's age is what I think makes this so surprising.

This is actually a brilliant take. If they get what they want from Kirk, and they obviously are betting a ton on that, then they expect to have a crappy draft position for the next couple of seasons at least. This gives them a young(ish) QB, on the cheap, who can learn and marinate without as much hurry.

That said...my main issue is that I think that's REALLY high for Penix, given his history. Yeah, it'd been awhile since a bad injury, but he was basically junk at least part of the game against Michigan and obviously hobbled.

In any case, Atlanta may have a Chargers' "Brees/Rivers" situation that they can profit from, as well. We'll all find out soon enough.

KOC, JJM, Flores...make a good plan, or you'll be following Kwesi....

Maybe they'll play Cousins during the season, Then Penix during Monday night & the Post-Season

Just read that Atlanta spent like 45 minutes with Penix total pre-Draft, lol. Complete surprise move. Kirk doesn't like someone breathing down his neck. This really changes the dynamic of things for him, I can see fans chanting for Penix if Cousins hits a couple game rough patch.

For sure. I do understand the reasoning but the opportunity cost of getting a guy you hope to start for the next two years, in a very winnable division on an (in theory) up and coming team is not nothing. I was surprised by the pick. It definitely could still work out swimmingly for them. I don't blame Kirk for being a bit blindsided though.

Reports are that Kirk asked for Penix's number and called him to welcome him to the team.  So while he was understandably disappointed and surprised, Kirk being Kirk handled the moment with class.

Yeah, of course. That's Kirk. But that's really not the point. What he feels about it behind the facade of politeness is something else.

I think if Kirk was 35 year old uninjured Aaron Rodgers, I'd be fully on team draft a different position.  I'm just of the camp that if you don't have an elite QB, you need to keep drafting one until you get one and I think Penix has that potential as much as any other prospect, although the injury history is a little scary.  I'm not a fan of waiting until the QB is off your team and you are desperate to draft the next option, so using that pick for a QB and not a starter at another position is just the cost of finding an elite QB to me.

Like JJ, Darrisaw, and Turner could all be #1 at their positions for the next decade and without an elite QB, we're probably hoping they win a SB, but getting an elite QB shifts it to how many SBs will they win.

I can totally see Kirk being blindsided, but he's just not elite enough to not have competition.  I imagine they are where we were.  Hoping that Kirk is going to get them to the promiseland, but leaning heavily on the hope side of things.  I certainly don't feel confident that Kirk plus Turner made them an immediate SB contender.

Yep. And this as well:

Ive heard it countless times when talking about Cousins and others shrewd contract negotiations....it's just business, well drafting the most important position when your starter is 35 and coming off a season ending injury is just smart business.

Another take I heard on NFL radio yesterday about it was like th8s...your QB has been a 10 year starter in the NFL and has 1 career playoff win in 5 attempts and is 35 years old....how do you not draft a QB with a roster like ATL currently has in the division they are in?

Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

Exactly the take I have been pounding the table for with our Vikings the last 5+ seasons and really forever. If the Vikings resigned Kirk to close to the deal Atlanta gave him would anyone here be crying if we still drafted JJ at 11? Very few. That is a succession plan at the most important position in the NFL. I think only a few fans would be critical if we kept Cousins and drafted Penix at 11. I think only a few fans would be critical if JJ went to Atlanta and we then picked Penix at 11 without Cousins in the fold.

Easy to be critical but Kirk is coming off a major injury that can reoccur at any moment which was one of the main reasons I did not want to commit to him beyond 2 years, at around 90, which wasn't happening.

Now I am not a huge Penix fan, but I have always been a vocal advocate to carpe diem when your identified QB is sitting there. So basically, I have no problem with the pick. It is total crapshoot especially at QB. Atlanta had the brass balls to draft the guy they wanted, good for them. In 3 years if Penix is leading them to the playoffs the folks that are most critical now will be fanboys of the great decision :)

If he’s the real deal, it’s a good pick.  If he busts, it’s a terrible pick.  The dumbest part of what they did is paying the ransom Cousins demanded.   I understand what you’re getting at, but there is some logic to picking a qb there.

Now that the Falcons have Penix, maybe Kirk can give the Falcons a hometown discount.

Well the Falcons have pick issues potentially for one with the tampering situation. On top of it, they will probably not have a chance at a QB that high in Kirks tenure. They are picking at 8 and wont pick there again for the foreseeable future. They just took their QB when they could.

With that said, that was fucking dumb. You pick Turner or Murphy with that pick. Or if you want to go the other way, you pick Odunze and just out score everyone. I believe they messed up completely

This is why its so stupid.

It has several dimensions of stupid. It's bad for Cousins, it's bad for Penix, it's bad for the Falcons, it's bad for culture. After adding Cousins, they could've turned a fringe playoff team into a legit contender by taking Odunze or Turner. Instead, they did nothing to improve their team in 2024. Sure, I get the succession thing. All for it. But you don't use a top 8 pick for that, given where they are in their window.

I also don't buy that you can say the '25 QB class is weak. It's just way too early to say. 2020 wasn't supposed to be very good either with Jake Fromm and Jacob Eason leading the way. Burrow and Love came out of nowhere. Even this year, Daniels and McCarthy were in nobody's early mock draft a year ago.

Part of me wonders if Cousins regrets moving on. Vikings too would've taken a QB, but they would not have blindsided him like this.

I and many others said for months that the Vikings re-signing Kirk while also drafting a first round QB was a bad plan, as the goals are diametrically opposed. I was told by quite a few members on this board that I was wrong and this is exactly what the Vikings should do. Well now ATL has done just that and people are calling them idiots. Kind of funny.

Either roll with Kirk. Or roll with Penix. Attempting to both at once is a waste of resources and time. I'm surprised Atlanta did this but I am glad they did and that the media is rightfully pointing it out as a bozo move.
