He's facing some recent 'criticism' on social media for being under-enthused on telecasts:

I'm just ok with Michaels, I've always kind of thought he's not the most excitable on broadcasts, but that really hasn't changed. He's mostly been like this his whole career. My opinion is they've gotten some shit games to call and he doesn't fade the fools gladly anymore. The NFL, whether they want to admit it or not, has become a deluded product. And oh yeah, the guy is almost 80 years old. I don't know why they insist on keeping people on air into their 80s, but they do. For instance, Lee Corso is hard for me to watch (he's 88 years old). I think for the 30 and under crowd, they are used to the hype. The hyperbole. The Gus Johnson types that go crazy every other play. Yelling. The color analysts that hype several players on every game as being the 'NFL's best'. Michaels is in stark contrast to that.

I've never been a huge fan of the guy, but I'm glad his attitude about the 'criticism' is go F yourself.

I dont know that there are any announcers out there that are worth a shit,  at least Al Michaels rarely makes me want to smash the TV over the stupid shot they say or just flat out unprepared lazy takes on the players or teams.

I mean it's Al Michaels, he is who he is. If you try to do something like that Nickelodeon deal, then you risk losing out. If you replace Al, who do you replace him with? There is some truth to the match ups being crap at times. I guess we'll see what happens

Al is one of my favorite football announcers ever but his best days are behind him. Obviously, he’s 80! If they wanna keep paying him and he wants to keep doing it then they can take the scrutiny that comes with it as well. Good for him for giving it all a big “meh”, but the criticisms are not unfair. He seems to care more about the over/under than the players these days.

Maybe if the Thursday games weren't mostly crap he'd be more engaged.

To be fair, the league entered the gambling into the game so there is a huge emphasis on over/under and point spreads

I think with Michaels its the same as it was late in Pat Summeral's career. He's slowing way down and he's a million miles from "do you believe in miracles," but the voice is the brand and that still has value.

I quit liking Michaels back in 1987 when he was in the booth for the Twins World Series games.  He acted like he was too good for the Metrodome (mentioned something about "slumming"), and publicly made accusations the Twins "pumped in" artificial crowd noise.  I really got the feeling he couldn't accept the Twins were just simply the best team in MLB that season.I couldn't stand the guy and thought he was an arrogant whiner; I've never liked him since.

I don't think there's any doubt he has a level of arrogance....like sometimes you get the impression he thinks its a bit beneath him.

kind of crazy that a guy whos fame sits solely on him sitting in a box talking about sports could get a big head.  I dont care how recognizable the name is... he's really no different that any of us bums except somebody put a microphone in front of him at some point.   However his call in the 80 Olympics.... still gives me goosebumps to hear it.

I've always liked Michaels, he is one of the classic voices in sports announcing history, I think it has gone under the radar that over all the years he has been on the air that he has probably been one of the most neutral announcers and rarely comes across as biased, just tells it like it is.

I was really surprised and disappointed during the Thanksgiving game of his reaction when they brought they brought out the special Thanksgiving sandwiches that a chef who was there on the broadcast was making for them, he quickly dismissed them which I thought was really disrespectful to the chef was working hard to prepare them.

Bob Costas was an intellectual, but I never ever thought he talked down to his audience or felt above sports. Al seems like sometimes he'd rather be doing something else 'more important'.

p.s. So just so everyone knows, I love Gus Johnson. I do. I use him only as a point to illustrate by opinion on the prior post.
