Remember when....
...Kirk's $35M/year salary was really high? With Justin Herbert's new $52M/year deal, Cousins' AAV now ranks 14th, nearly slumming down with the non QBs.
1 Justin Herbert LACQB $52,500,000
2 Lamar Jackson BALQB $52,000,000
3 Jalen Hurts PHIQB $51,000,000
4 Aaron Rodgers NYJQB $50,271,667
5 Russell Wilson DENQB $48,517,647
6 Kyler Murray ARIQB $46,100,000
7 Deshaun Watson CLEQB $46,000,000
8 Patrick Mahomes KCQB $45,000,000
9 Josh Allen BUFQB $43,005,667
10 Dak Prescott DALQB $40,000,000
11
Matthew Stafford LARQB $40,000,000
12
Daniel Jones NYGQB $40,000,000
13 Derek Carr NOQB $37,500,000
14 Kirk Cousins MINQB $35,000,000
15 Jared Goff DETQB $33,500,000
Kyler Murray, LMAO.
I'll be curious to see if Russell Wilson is indeed as washed as he looked last year. Might have been an anomaly, but if not, what a brutal trade and contract for the Broncos.
Wilson is one who I will be watching closely too.
I would take Cousins over at least 5 of the QB's on that list. Maybe over 6 of em.
Contrary to what our star WR thinks, I would only take Mahomes, Allen and Herbert over Kirk from that list.

no Jalen?!

I was just thinking there are only four I would "for certain" take over Cousins: Mahomes, Allen, Hurts and Herbert. Rodgers and Jackson are borderline but definitely not slam dunks.
It's a bit misleading, its actually a 5 year extension on current deal so the average is only 42 million per year.

I was gonna say, Kyler Murry, Wilson, Watson, Carr... he is already below some non-QBs.
Wilson is washed, his dedication to football has expired. That is why Seattle traded him. Watson may still have elite talent, but that head tells me he isn't made for that position.
Where does it end? At some point the revenue is going to flatten out and the salary cap is also going to level out. So if your quarterback is on a contract that pays upwards of $50 million how much is going to be left over for your other franchise players?
With the franchise values going up in the $4 to $6 billion range soon only hedge fund guys are going to be able to afford to buy them. Where does that end?
@"purplefaithful" said:I am not a Hurts fan, they have a pretty tight offense and a great OL that really helps him. If you were to put him in our offense, I think he would look like a different QB and I don't think JJ would have close to the numbers he has.@"JR44" said: Contrary to what our star WR thinks, I would only take Mahomes, Allen and Herbert over Kirk from that list. no Jalen?!

The salary cap isn’t going to level out. The salary cap is increasing at a similar
rate as the stock market, because it’s a reflection of how much money is out
their floating around. Similarly, franchise
valuations will continue to increase. The
value of all these things will double every 10 years, give or take.
In 10 years, the same guys that could afford a team now,
will still be able to afford a team, because all their assets are increasing in value comparable to the value of the NFL teams, unless they make lousy investments.

Could be wrong, but I think we see a much better year from Wilson.
So does Kirk still need to take a pay cut?
That’s what some talking heads/ Vikings fans keep saying.

Vikings might be playing with fire here. Cousins offered to take a discount in talks this spring. If he blows up in his 2nd season in this offense, the money could go a lot higher.

What are his goals? I
think some team could pay him a good amount.
If he’s looking for a SB or staying in MN and not upsetting the family,
he might have to take less the market value or go a year at a time. It’s pretty clear that the Vikings want to
have the option to get a rookie contract QB and aren’t going to give Cousins a long
contract, and he could improve his odds at a SB by voluntarily taking less for
these last couple years.
I look at that list and there’s more than a couple players
on that list I think are handcuffing their team more than they are helping the
team at those prices, so I don’t think it’s a given that the market being
bigger now changes whether or not it’s a smart move.

Well, as I often say, from a GM's perspective, there are only two kinds of QBs in the NFL--those you can win a Super Bowl with and those you can't. And everyone on that list is in the first group. So you have to pay them market value. You really don't have much choice.

We shall see. I think his willingness to grind is behind him. As Favre discovered at the end, the year round dedication to the game gets old as they get older. Wilson has his money, his stardom, his girl, why waste all that time it takes to be great?

”willingness to grind”. yup - hits the nail on the head IMO.Hes just a name, with nothing to prove from what i saw last year - Im curious to see what happens with Sean Payton, ‘cause hes such a loud mouth prick. If Wilson plays dead again this year its going to be fun watching that little punk have a coronary all season

Same reason we all do. Personal pride. Last year had to be a big embarrassment to Wilson, who, let's not forget, was a 9X Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner. Also, he's only 34. He'll play another 4 years before he's washed. As much as I hate Payton, I think he's smart enough to sync QB with offense. I think we're going to see a whole different Wilson.

We shall see. I think his "pride" got left in his private office. One would have thought he would have applied some of that personal pride last year.As VG83 sez, it could be fun to watch Payton and Wilson figure it out.
