Bears get #1 overall pick in 23 draft
The Bears technically lost their final game of the season when they fell to the Vikings 29-13, but in the long run, they won the day. Since the Bears lost and the Texans beat the Colts 32-31, the Bears now have the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft.T
It’s unlikely the Bears use the No. 1 overall pick since they have their franchise quarterback in Justin Fields. Instead, Ryan Poles could trade that pick for a king’s ransom to a team that covets Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud. It would be possible to do that and stay within the top-five, too.
Since the Texans no longer have the top choice, they could trade up one spot to ensure they get their guy at QB. The Colts will have a top-five pick and need a quarterback after the Matt Ryan experiment failed. The Seahawks could end up with a top-five pick if the Broncos fall to the Chargers on Sunday afternoon, and they could be in on a QB too, depending on how they feel about Geno Smith moving forward.
The last time a team traded the No. 1 overall pick in the draft was 2016, when the Rams traded places with the Titans to select Jared Goff. The Rams had the No. 15 overall pick that season and sent that pick, plus two 2016 second-round picks, a 2016 third-round pick, a 2017 first-round pick and a 2017 third-round pick to Tennessee to move up to No. 1. In addition to the No. 1 overall pick, the Titans also sent the Rams a 2016 fourth-round pick and a 2016 sixth-round pick.
The Bears haven’t had many No. 1 overall picks in franchise history, and they haven’t had one for a long time, either. The last time the Bears picked at the top of the draft was in 1947 when they selected halfback Bob Fenimore. That pick didn’t quite pan out, as Fenimore only played in 10 games. He accumulated 408 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns. The only other No. 1 overall pick in Bears history was Tom Harmon in 1941, and that one didn’t work out either. Harmon opted not to play football, and went to Hollywood instead. He starred in a few movies like “Harmon of Michigan,” “Triple Threat,” and “Bonzo Goes to College,” but eventually returned to football and played for the Rams in 1946 and 1947.

If I were Chicago, I would see what sort of haul they could get for that pick. It would be so bizarre to trade 1 Ohio State qb for another.

I love me some Scott Hansen on NFL Redzone, but.....his going ON and ON about Chicago getting the #1 pick was ridiculously over the top. It doesn't guarantee shit. And it was almost like they had achieved something great, lol. God, sometimes the manufactured drama by the NFL media is so utterly stupid.
I think the Bears trade down with Indy at 4. Indy takes Levis, Houston takes Young, Cards take Anderson or Carter, Bears trade down again with Seattle, who takes Stroud, then the Bears take LT Skoronski or the remaining DL between Anderson and Carter. Write it down. B)

Thought it was interesting that the Bears kept targeting 5-9 Shelley with 6-4 Claypool. Not a bad idea, but the result? Claypool 2 catches for 29 yards.

While this is true, they still have a second round pick from the Roquan Smith trade and they accomplished exactly what they set out to do this season, which was;
- Clear cap space, they have the most money in the league to spend in free agency
- See progress enough from Fields to confirm they had a young star at QB to build around
- They moved players they didn't want to pay for draft picks
- They have the number 1 overall pick in the draft which gives them a ton of flexibilityThey are checking all the boxes you want out of a rebuild and now Poles gets to oversee the retooling of this team with a ton of ammunition. The Bears did what I wish the Vikings would have done this year, which was blow it up for a season to rebuild this roster to be real contenders moving forward.

Write it down. B)A trade down with Indy makes almost too much sense. Ultimately might come down to how the Bears grade Anderson/Carter and how the Texans rank the QBs. If the Texans have a healthy preference and the Bears like one defensive player over the other they might just flip-flop.

We went 13-4. We tied for the second best record in the NFC. We won the North. We ARE real contenders right now.
We did all this while changing defensive schemes and a rookie head coach/GM.What more could you possibly ask for? Except the draft this year has been an amazing success.
Are we so sure that the Bears won't draft another QB? What if they value Stroud, Levis or Young more than Fields? They can draft their QB & trade Fields. Lots of teams will be looking for QBs & won't be in a position to draft the top 3.

Lots of teams will be looking for QBs & won't be in a position to draft the top 3.I am not convinced that Fields is their future... he is a weapon when on the move, but his passing didnt scare anyone and he has already shown that he cant handle the punishment that comes at this level from being a running QB ( IIRC, he missed time at least twice this year from injuries he got from running the ball) granted he didnt have a lot of weapons to work with, but he still just doesnt impress me much unless he is running the ball.

I get that, but at what cost is this season going to render moving forward? We are kicking the can down the road once again on Cousins, have salary cap issues with a lot of key veterans on the chopping block and big roster holes to fill. That's the point. Unless we go to the Super Bowl this year then we are just delaying an inevitable rebuild and I don't believe that the juice for this season was worth the squeeze of putting us in a tough situation moving forward. The Lions and Bears are both going to be in much better situations from a roster standpoint then the Vikings in two seasons and are building long term. We are spending valuable resources trying to win THIS SEASON when nobody considers us a real threat and the roster deficiencies are obvious. We are rolling into the playoffs with a banged up offensive line, the 31st ranked defense in the league, and a kicker who is all of a sudden having trouble converting extra points. It's why I was in favor of tearing it down much like the Bears did and letting the new coach/GM build this roster how they wanted moving forward. We are winning on the last fumes of the talent pool Zimmer/Spielman brought in and turnover is in the immediate horizon.
