I cant believe they'd get anywhere near the value he could bring for 1 more year behind Dalvin.

And we know Dalvin is going to miss some games...Thats probably the truth vs just being negative.

RB is probably the deepest position group we have. Makes me wonder if the addition of Chandler changed things a bunch?

I think Chandler definitely changed the math in that they feel like they are still effective if Mattison goes. For Mattison, I think it would be a good thing. He deserves a chance to start and he’ll likely be a very good back in that role. There are certainly teams who will not field a back of his ability as it is. I would think they’d get an offer or two. How good they are remains to be seen.

Maybe a little with the Chandler thing, but I believe Minnesota only will trade Mattison for a very good offer. That may never come. Like you mention, his worth is big for the Vikings this year. But some team might step up and with all the RB depth on this team, then it makes sense.

You also leak this type of rumor when you are trying to set up a bidding war.

I think they love Chandler. And also love the promise of what Kene could do in special packages. I'd feel a lot better going into the season with Mattison as our RB2, but he could probably start for a handful of teams. And if one of those teams wants to pay for that, I'd listen too.

So what draft compensation would all of us be happy with?

A 5th?  4th?

I doubt anyone offers more than a 4th rounder...Even that might be wishful thinking.

It would have to be a 4th, IMO.

Working for us is that he was a 3rd rounder who has every bit lived up to his draft slot. He's only 24 years old with very low mileage and still on a very cheap rookie contract. Plus the bit about comp pick above almost ensures we won't settle for a late rounder. I would say 3rd is the highest, but 4th might be the lowest.

Well the comp pick would slot at the end of the 4th so even a 4th from some team is a higher pick.   A team would have to want a backup rb bad to give up a 3rd, doesn't seem likely.

If a team is going to trade for Mattison at all, it would be for him to at least compete for the starting job. And there are several teams out there who need an upgrade at starting RB.

Could a possible trade include a player of need versus a draft pick? Of course, center comes to mind, but what team is going to give up a starting caliber center at this time of year unless they have two. Are there any teams sitting on two decent centers that could start on the Vikes and has a need for a RB?

I dont know how many teams have starting caliber centers sitting on their bench though?

If the Vikings keep him they get to use him and keep the option to resign him in 2023.

If he leaves as a UFA after this season, the Vikings likely get a 5-7th round compensatory pick.

Keep Mattison!

Solid point by Braun. But if this is the case, just keep him. Also, I can't help but wonder if Mattison isn't partly pushing this. He wants to be a RB1 and he knows the Vikings might be very tempted to use Chandler, at least in part, as Cook's relief, diminishing his value in a contract year.

Agreed. If they can get a 3rd or even 4th then sure, move him, but I doubt those offers are out there. And anything less it’s kind of like eh, just keep him then part ways. By far the most likely scenario I think.

I’m extremely skeptical that a dozen teams have shown interest, at any price. We’ll see what happens but my guess is he plays out the year here.
