I didn't see our signature defense tonight, did I miss it?  Seems to me Zimmerman has been working on some new defense.  I like it.

I agree.  I didn't really notice that formation with Kendricks and Bar in the middle showing blitz at anytime last night.  I don't think they blitzed Harry or any CBs on passing downs either.  Looked like the front four took care of business for the most part.

That front 4 did their job. I also think that Zimmer knows you cant blitz Brees as he will find that open guy

I had heard during training camp that Zimmer is switching up his defense a bit so that you can't key off of it as much. He can bring that back when he needs to but apparently training camp and preseason was about introducing new wrinkles to the defense. And I have to admit that I was questioning whether or not he would be able to have the team coached up on these new wrinkles in time to start the season.... Because you know... I'm so qualified to make those statements.  :/

Said the same thing in another thread. Most QBs in the League have problems with the A Gap look and Zimmer's other blitz schemes.

Brees and Brady eat those looks for lunch if the pressure doesn't get there uber fast.

Smart call to rely on the Front Four and force Drew to take what he could get. Will probably see the same style next week and against Rodjerk.

But against the rest of the League I expect to see more blitzing and exotic looks.

Mostly front 4 from what I see.  Kendricks did a delayed blitz up the middle on the bogus roughing penalty.  Saw Barr on the edge once, but other than that, don't remember much added pressure.

It was great to see the variety. Harrison made a really nice play, so did Kendricks. Linval and BRob were totally fired up. Lots of focus and discipline on display.

Brian was in the A gap most of the time, or headed there. Because the way they slid their protection it forced him to move post snap and sometimes personal. Most of his job when he is there is to push the pocket.
I had to ask him after the game if he enjoyed putting offensive guards on their asses or what.
At least twice he just bulled over guards.
At least that's what I got out of what he was telling me happened. He just wasn't standing up to do it.

was watching on my phone so I couldn't tell always, but it looked like Brian was out there a lot.  Even got an extended bit at DE from what I could see.

I think that was mostly to get their playcalling on where they were sliding protection, but he was told he wouldn't miss much playing time. We'll see how it goes in the future.
I'd like to have seen more time, it'll take me a little time to get use to this. Lol

I think how you play Bree's is not by dying by the Blitz. I think we made him uncomfortable enough with DL pressure.

Hey Pops, I heard Brian on the radio this morning...Old Zimm has him calling quite a bit of schemes now doesnt he ;)

Yeah he does. He's been given a lot of freedom To move players and change plays as he sees things developing. He did it a lot last year too, but I think they've added a few more schemes and such this year too.

I would love to know how much of the game plan the Vikes actually used.  I would think after the Saints RT went down, most of the blitz packages were shelved.  Also, no McKinnon wildcat.  I think once the Vikes felt they had a good handle on the game, they kept some blitzes and plays in their back pocket for future use.

No wildcat snaps was certainly a welcomed surprise. I am somewhat hopeful that if the offense can continue to perform well, then there won't be much need to rely on gimmicks to manufacture yards. They did attempt one end around with Diggs, which was a drive killer. I think after that, they didn't see much reason to get too cute.

It will be interesting to see what trends show up with the D this year. In year's past it has been double A gap blitzes, overload blitzes, and lining up Robison over the A gap, which has been expanded this year. Once we're a few games in more trends should start to emerge.
