Williams is to blame?
Shefter just reported on NFL Network that Trent Williams made it known earlier today that he would prefer not to go to Minnesota. If I had to guess, it's because we don't have a lot of cap room. So Williams still wants to be paid like one of the highest paid tackles, if not the highest paid.
Just for a sense of the timeline here, a source told me just now that some #Vikings staff were told about an hour before the Draft started last night, that a potential trade for Trent Williams "is not going to happen." Again, that was yesterday. On the saga goes.

I highly highly doubt Williams nixed a trade to the Vikings. They made the second round of the playoffs last year and could certainly find a way to compensate him. Although, he’s on his same deal anyhow so I’m not sure I’m buying that excuse either.
In my opinion, the jackasses in DC made it all up to try and drive the price up between two other teams who probably knew what Minny was offering. They succeeded by getting a 3rd next year. I don’t think there was any chance Rick was giving up a 3 next year given the situation.
In my opinion he’d have been great, but the contract would have been an issue from here on out. LT hasn’t been our biggest problem either. I love the Cleveland pick and I think he has the capability to be a great long term starter.
Interesting. My buddy in MD (Coached the Diggs brothers and has several NFL connections) told me yesterday before the draft that Williams requested to not be traded to the Vikings.
I didn't bring it up because I am not one to push out rumors, and frankly, it was hearsay. He also noted that he is a headcase and suggested we we're better off because we have a rookie on a rookie salary.
Just an FYI.
