Of all the O-line losses we could afford, I honestly think Boone would be the least likely to hurt us badly. Whoever winds up being our backup Center is probably better suited to be our starting left Guard over Boone.

As much as I like Elflein at the Center position, he might actually be better at guard. From all indications, he has really great footwork, pulls really well, is very sound technically, and if he can play center, he isn't stupid. Add to that, I think his arm length height is betted suited to guard than Boone. I'm not sure if Easton is as athletic as Elflein, but has a little more experience in the system, so maybe it makes sense to give him the nod making the line calls this year.

Boone has been sliding for at least 3 years, and if he may have just got injured out of a job if somebody shines this week.

I think we are better off this year though. Once we find the right mixture and chemistry I think we will be a lot better. Right now it is a bunch trial and error till we can figure it out.

LOL, not really a ringing endorsement for being 'better off this year', you know? IMO, the line will be problematic all season. A damn shame because the team looks pretty solid everywhere else. But unfortunately, its one of the most important units on a team.

Problematic - in that it will be an avg line?  There will be a few injuries.   That's about all.   Lots of bad olines in the NFL these days.  Not unique to Minn.

Average? They'll have to prove they are at least average. Yes, lots of bad lines....on bad football teams. On playoff teams? Not so much.

Reiff =    injured and no real word when he'll be back full time
Boone =  injured with a wrap on his knee
Remmers = looks like hot garbage
Center spot = a rookie or UDFA

I mean, if we were looking at this situation from the outside, we'd say that looks like trouble. Not sure how to see it any other way or than thru purple shades.

There are many ways to see the same thing. An optimist would say that in the last two years we added three well paid free agents, a high draft pick, and the player we traded for a couple of years ago is playing well. A pessimist would say what you just said. There is a middle, more realistic take, but it's boring.

Isn't it a lot more relevant to note that Minnesota went 3-8 over the end of 2016 and virtually everyone has claimed the lousy/injured OL was the biggest reason?? We can't say, "We would have made the playoffs last year if only our OL was better" AND say, "We can make the playoffs this year even if our OL is not better"...

No one is making the second statement that I have noticed.   The oline is better this year.  How much is the question

Well, JimmyinSD said Denver reached the SB with a bad OL, and you said Seattle (a regular playoff team lately) has a very bad OL. Maybe you were both just randomly mentioning teams with poor OL play, but the implication I took was that you think the Vikings can overcome a bad OL.

As to your statement that the OL is better, I wouldn't say that is universally accepted, just from the comments within this thread and the injury level thus far.

If everyone stays healthy, our offensive line SHOULD be better. Significantly better in the run game. And marginally better in pass pro. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. But so much of it depends on health.

With that in mind, I like our depth a little more this year. Hill looks like a better backup swing tackle than Clemmings was. Isadora and Sirles look like better backup guards than Beavers was. And whoever loses the center competition should be better depth than what we had last year. So a minor injury here or there shouldn't hurt us too much. But NO team can endure the injury madness that we went through last year. Let's hope that doesn't happen again.

not in response to the comment that it was directed at.

and no,  as bad as our D played at times last year I dont know that we would have done much better as it was the D that was failing at critical times and often early in games when they were fresh.  hardly an OL only issue.

But they had strong QB play to make up for it.

New England the season before Cassel got the Keys, their Oline gave up the least amount of sacks and it was a  really small number.  Then the Bone Crusher took out Brady and their Oline gave up near the most in the league.

If we get strong QB play, and make defenses pay with a passing attack the Oline could benefit, but we have to get some balls down the field early in the season.

I agree,  i dont really want to see what Cook can do for the passing game,  we know what he can do.  I want to see us show teams that we are going to pass over their LBs and move the defense off the LOS and make teams pay.
