Cornerback XR virtually unavoidable for top receivers, no matter where they line
Posted by: purplefaithful - 10-14-2017, 02:27 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (1)

When the Vikings faced Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson at Lambeau Field on Christmas Eve 2016, their plan for dealing with top receivers was still in the process of being fully formed.
Xavier Rhodes had shadowed alpha receivers such as Calvin Johnson, Odell Beckham, Alshon Jeffery and DeAndre Hopkins, but he hadn’t done it against Nelson. And even on the days when Rhodes would follow an elite wideout across the field, he’d stay at his normal spot when that receiver would line up in the slot.
With the metamorphosis of that plan not quite complete by last December, confusion reigned in the Vikings’ secondary early in the loss to the Packers. Coach Mike Zimmer said after the game that Rhodes was supposed to shadow Nelson all day, only to see the Vikings’ corners go against his plan and stay on their respective sides for the first series. And as startling as the development was, it didn’t have much to do with the final result anyway: Nelson burned the Vikings for 81 of his 145 yards on three catches from the slot, when he was facing Captain Munnerlyn.
This time around, there might not be anywhere near the ambiguity about where Rhodes will be. After shadowing one receiver all game five times last year, he’s already done it four times this season. And on several occasions, Rhodes has even started following his man into the slot...

Mayfield has had some off field issues that will drop him...Rosen 3rd is a head scratcher...I still like the son of Zeus as our #1 and maybe we double down Norman style and grab Mayfield in the second and catch lighting in a bottle twice with a talented prospect falling to Day 2 because of off field concerns...Price in the 3rd and we have our OL rebuild done and a QB to possibly build on...

Can "The Mountain" make a difference?

Not sure with Bradford, Cook and Diggs out...But it's kinda cool none-the-less

Skol: The Mountain comes to Minnesota to amp up Vikings game-day chantThe "Game of Thrones" star will sound the gjallarhorn and lead fans in the Skol chant

Not for nothing do they call him the Mountain. At more than 400 solid pounds, “Game of Thrones” television star Thor Bjornsson will be at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday.
If the native Icelander can’t get the crowd to rock the building with the Skol chant before the game against the Green Bay Packers, well who can?
The 6-foot-9 Bjornsson will step out onto a platform above the western end zone to sound the gjallarhorn. Then he will raise his massive, tattooed arms to clap above his head to lead an anticipated full house of 66,200 in the Skol chant.
In Iceland, it’s called the Viking war chant. A video of 10,000 Icelanders bellowing the chant and clapping in sync went viral after the hometown team’s underdog Euro Cup soccer tournament in the summer of 2016. USA Today called it the “coolest chant in all of sports” and “bone-chilling.”
With an unofficial handoff from Iceland last year, the Minnesota Vikings appropriated the chant for the inaugural season at U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016. They’ve been using it at every home game. The consensus has been that fans are still trying to get the hang of it and have yet to fulfill their potential that could propel the chant to the heights of sports traditions.

Like most 23-year-olds fresh out of college, I had a job interview.
It was May 2013, and my senior year of football at Minnesota State–Mankato had ended a few months earlier. I still wasn’t 100% sure what I was going to do after college, but I knew a guy who knew a guy at a place called Patterson Dental, and he put in a good word for me.
The job was … well, basically, I’d be selling dental equipment. It was actually more of an internship, but it was a pretty decent opportunity at a really good company. So I put on a suit and tie and went in for an interview. It was a good interview. But I remember that at one point, the interviewer asked me one of those cliché interview questions.
“If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?”
He’d obviously know I was lying if I said, “To be in dental equipment sales!” So I told him the truth.
“To play in the NFL.”
The guy’s head kind of popped up, and he gave me this … look. I don’t know how to really describe it, but I knew that look because it was one I had seen before — only a few months earlier, actually. It was a few days after my last college game and I came home to my girlfriend Caitlin — who’s now my wife — and said, “You know what? I want to play in the NFL, so I’m gonna give it a shot and see what happens.”
And she gave me that same look.
Like, Really?
Then she said, “You sure you don’t want to just get a normal job?”

Who believes Minnesota can beat GB with Keenum at the helm?
Posted by: StickyBun - 10-13-2017, 10:04 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (33)

I just can't see it. Being at home is helpful, but if the Packers bring pressure, Keenum can't get set to launch passes. His weaker arm becomes more of an issue. Wish we had Cook for this game. If Minnesota can't stretch the field, at least sporadically, its going to be very tough. Viking's D is going to need to play hard for 60 minutes.

  OT: Eagles Are For Real

Man, that team is playing well.  Wentz is already proving to be a top tier leader at QB, and that D just stuffs the run.  I really envy how they build that team on both sides of the ball.
