Case Keenum improves to 4-2, but Vikings’ QB situation still up in air
Posted by: purplefaithful - 10-30-2017, 12:19 AM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

All indications are Bridgewater will be activated. Bradford’s situation is murky, though Zimmer insists he will play again this season.
“Hopefully, I have a decision to make,” said Zimmer, who welcomes having multiple quarterbacks available. “I don’t know of any yet. We’ve got two days of practice (this week), got another day of practice (Nov. 6), sit down, evaluate everything.”
Overall, Zimmer complimented Keenum’s play since taking over for Bradford.
“Case has done an unbelievable job,” Zimmer said. “He’s done what we’ve asked him to do. He’s come out and kept things rolling, and we’ll just figure it out as we go.”

Adam Thielen, other Vikings fired up after attending Premier League game
Posted by: purplefaithful - 10-30-2017, 12:11 AM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

LONDON — Thanks to the Premier League, some Vikings players were extra fired up Sunday.
At least seven Vikings attended Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Saturday in London. Wide receiver Adam Thielen bought an Arsenal jersey at the game that he proudly wore to the news conference following Minnesota’s 33-16 win over Cleveland at Twickenham Stadium.
“When I got to the Arsenal game and you can see how passionate they are about their sports and especially soccer, it kind of jacked me up” for Sunday’s game, Thielen said. “I was pumped up the whole game just because of the atmosphere. … (The fans) brought it over to (ours).”
Before 74,237 enthusiastic fans at Twickenham, Thielen caught five passes for 98 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter when he was wide open in the end zone after a Browns breakdown. Thielen then sent the crowd into a frenzy by celebrating with a soccer slide.
Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr called Thielen’s celebration “awesome,” and said, “I give him a 10 out of 10.”
“I’m a big soccer fan now after going to the Arsenal game,” Thielen said. “(The celebration) kind of goes back to going to that game. … When you’ve got fans that are that passionate about something, it’s kind of cool to show them, ‘Hey, I like soccer, too.’ ”

Wonder if there's a spot on Zimmer Staff?

Browns' Jackson confident of owners' support after 0-8 startLONDON — Coach Hue Jackson believes he has the backing of the Cleveland Browns' ownership after the team lost its first eight games for the second consecutive year.
Jackson, whose Browns lost 33-16 to the Minnesota Vikings at Twickenham Stadium on Sunday, has overseen one victory since being hired prior to last season, a 20-17 win at home against the San Diego Chargers in Week 16. In all, the Browns have lost 34 of their last 36 games, beginning with a 26-23 overtime defeat to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 18, 2015.

  Defense wins, Wash-Car-Atlanta-Cincy
Posted by: Skodin - 10-29-2017, 10:38 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (1)

Games arent as tough as they seem. None of these offenses should keep anyone up at night. Car and Atlanta played more mediocre football today, luckily playing two teams that are below average.

Skins, dropping like flies. Bengals, needed a D TD to beat a bad Colts team at home

We bring our defense, these are all Wins. Very few offenses that are truly scary any more. Our defense can win us more games, if we get any quality consistent QB play from any of the 3, this team is going deep into January

Souhan: Shurmur's play-calling is best thing that could have happened for Vikings
Posted by: purplefaithful - 10-29-2017, 09:54 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (7)

Norv Turner was a renowned offensive coach, but the Vikings caught a break when he quit almost a year ago today. In some ways, Shurmur has faced more challenges through the first two months of this season than Turner did before he quit. With Shurmur running the offense, the Vikings are 6-2 and look more diverse and deceptive.
Watch the Vikings’ offense from the press box this season, and you see receivers open constantly. You also see running plays producing against stacked fronts.

In the third quarter on Sunday, the Vikings earned a first-and-goal from the Browns’ 1-yard-line. Shurmur lined up fullback C.J. Ham in the backfield and running back Jerick McKinnon in the right slot. McKinnon went in motion toward center, took the handoff, and scored as Ham and two tight ends cleared a massive hole. Then McKinnon scored almost as easily on a two-point conversation.
It’s difficult to find or create space near the goalline. On consecutive runs, McKinnon met about as much resistance as a Who fan in Hyde Park.
“Pat’s varied,’’ Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “He does a lot of different things, he moves the pocket, he’s got a lot of different formations and movements and runs.”
If someone told you in September of 2016 that the 2017 Vikings would be 6-2 while relying on Case Keenum, Jerick McKinnon and Adam Thielen, you would have asked how much time that someone had been spending in Colorado.

Zimmer praises Thielen: 'He's probably as good a route runner as we have'
Posted by: purplefaithful - 10-29-2017, 09:37 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (9)

Third-and-15. Otherwise known as time for Adam Thielen to make a play.
Still sounds a little weird, doesn’t it?
“People just kind of look at this kid, Division II player from Mankato, and they don’t think he’s as talented as anyone else out there,” Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph said after Sunday’s 30-16 win over the Browns at Twickenham Stadium. “And he is.”
On that ninth snap, Thielen got open and Case Keenum found him for a 17-yard gain. Four snaps later, the lead was cut in half, 6-3.
“He sets routes up really good,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said of Thielen’s savvy third-down play. “He leans one way and then goes the other way. He’s probably as good a route runner as we have.”
Thielen finished with five catches for 98 yards, including an 18-yard score that was followed by a crowd-pleasing celebration in which he slid on his knees, a la the soccer stars he loves to watch.
