He’ll be able to afford to live in the Bay Area now.

Huge overpay IMO,  he is nothing special at QB and by paying him as such they are handcuffed in their ability to put the pieces around him to overcome his shortcomings.   Their saving grace may be they typically draft pretty good and can overcome his contract with continued draft success,  but that always seems to average itself out over time as well.

Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

The worst thing a franchise can do these days is pay top-tier qb money to a mid-tier qb. Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence, Kirko, Jordan Love, Russ in Denver, the list goes on.

I'm not even sure if Purdy is mid-tier. He was bottom-of-the-draft for a reason and his success occurred when the 49ers had an all-world team around him. He looked like hot dogshit a lot of the time last year when the team around him was considerably hamstrung.

Teams fail to have a backup plan so they overpay at QB.  I hope we don't stop drafting QBs even if JJM fulfils our wildest dreams.

They really didnt have a choice in this mkt...

He's' not going to get Dak or Allen $$$, probably a win for 49'ers..

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

you always have a choice,  its just so many teams dont see it that way.  If JJM goes out an plays like one of the very best, then he should get paid like it,  but the GM should always be looking to avoid being handcuffed into paying mediocre players top tier money because they dont have a better option.  the best option for the niner would have been to get into the sweeps for one of the FA QBs and use that leverage to sign Purdy for less,  or dangle him out there and see if they could get a couple picks for him and move on.

If I were them I'd offer him a Mayfield/Darnold type deal and let his agent shop around. I don't think there are teams lining up to pay him 55 million a year, not a chance.

But if any NFC team other than us wants to do something dumb that hamstrings their franchise, I say more power to them. We are making pretty smart moves overall (as long as we spray the entire TCO property with Aaron Rodgers repellant every morning) and if the competition shoots itself in the foot, even better.

The QB that gets us to the Superbowl will be considered a hero. Heroes get big bucks.

Purdy is 27/15 as a starter in the regular season and playoffs. Cant compare him to journeymen like Mayfield/Darnold or expect him to settle for just $30mm a year  - sounds crazy right?

Shanahan is one of the better HC's in the league. Knows what he's doing and what he's got (or not) in Purdy.

I personally dont think he's elite, but he's good. Plenty good enough to win a SB for a team with a decent surround. Which the 49'ers have more often than not over the decades.
