Joe Buck, Troy Aikman reportedly have âtensionâ in what could be last year of their partnership
The next time he âwelcomes you into the broadcast boothâ during a Monday night game, Joe Buck could be looking for backup.
As reported by Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, âthere has been tensionâ between long-time on-air partners Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
It comes at a time when Buck has gotten a new five-year deal to remain with ESPN/ABC and Aikman has not.
Glasspiegel explains that, during Monday nightâs game between the Bills and Rams at SoFi Stadium in L.A., Buck âbroke the iceâ on the situation, prompting an argument between the duo. The situation de-escalated, and there was no sign of any issue during the actual broadcast.
The situation suggests that ESPN/ABC will be looking (if they arenât already) to replace Aikman after the season ends. The fact that Buck did his deal without Aikmanâs deal being done implies that Buck has no qualms about making a change after a quarter of a century with the Hall of Fame quarterback.

McAfee may not be a bad move. Brings in a much more open opinion than the norm everyday media. I mean, why can't people even give him a chance. I think he would be good at it and bring some personality to the booth.

I think Aikman has been so dry for so long that bringing in a guy with a personality would be a good move. Who would be the options to replace him?

Herbstreit is a good one. I like he personality. Palmer is actually very intelligent and never seems like he is not prepared. If that makes sense.
The OG...

Dont throw tomatoes, but I like Jesse Palmer's takes...I mean the guy was just the second Canadian born to play QB in the NFL, he knows his s hit.
My wife loves him for other reasons, including The Bachelor.

Well, I've never watched "The Bachelor", but I'm quite aware of who Jesse Palmer is. (Other than time spent in the NFL) I think he would be a delight. He can surely add his own "Twist" on a play and/or his comments. The issue is, I'd probably be waiting for someone to bring him a pie or cake to taste while in the booth. đ

Troy Aikmanâs role with the Dolphins hovers over his broadcasting future
Troy Aikmanâs contract with ESPN expires after the 2026 season, which culminates in the four-letter networkâs first ever Super Bowl. Absent an extension, which Aikman currently doesnât expect, heâll become a broadcasting free agent.
His separate relationship with the Dolphins hovers over Aikmanâs future on TV.
Via Mark Maske of Front Office Sports, Aikman does not have a âformal and ongoing agreementâ to serve as a consultant with the Dolphins. This means that heâs working for the team on an at-will basis, and that he (or the team) can end the relationship at any time.
It could be in Aikmanâs best interests to end the relationship with the Dolphins now. If ESPN (or CBS or Prime Video) will be paying $20 million or more for its top NFL analyst gig, why would any of them hire someone who has both restrictions on his access and a cloud over his objectivity, thanks to having an employment relationship with one of its teams.
Last month, Aikman âcalled bullshitâ on the idea that other broadcasters donât have conflicts of interest. That misses the point. Aikman is employed by the Dolphins. That relationship prevents him from entering team facilities or attending practices â and it creates avoidable complications when it comes to games involving the team that employs him.
When ESPNâs Jason Kelce refers to the Eagles as âwe,â itâs because he used to play for the team. (And ESPN is trying to get him to knock it off.) When Aikman talks about the Dolphins, âweâ is technically accurate; he works for the team.
For networks with options, why would any network opt for someone who is employed by one of the teams? Beyond Tom Brady (who owns a piece of the Raiders and has an even more obvious conflict of interest, even if Fox doesnât care), none of the other candidates for the biggest jobs in NFL broadcasting bring such baggage with them.
As to Aikman, the right decision is obvious if he hopes to get another high-profile broadcasting job. He should end his relationship with the Dolphins as soon as possible.

I agree, Palmer could add someone that is always super prepared and shares with a really good personality. He really is so smooth with his craft.
I actually like Luke Kuechley as well. He seems to always be on point with his takes and highly intelligent.
Peyton and Eli may be a way to go as well for ESPN. Unless they feel their own broadcast is bringing in enough money and will stay successful enough
Will Troy Aikman finish the season with Monday Night Football?
Because millions care intensely about NFL football, they have similarly strong feelings about the voices that narrate the action on TV. And the unexpected escalation of tensions between Troy Aikman and ESPN/ABC has plenty of people wondering whether the relationship will end before his current contract expires.
Boomer Esiason raised the question this week on his WFAN morning show of whether Aikman would walk away.
âI donât think he would do it, thatâs not his nature, I donât think,â Esiason said Friday, via Brandon Contes of Awful Announcing.
Of course, it may not be Aikmanâs choice. ESPN could yank him from the broadcast whenever it chooses, if the situation continues to deteriorate. Sure, theyâd need to replace him on the fly. But they currently have a small army of NFL voices on the payroll â many of whom would drive a lawnmower through a minefield for a chance to fill the spot.
Itâs hard to imagine Aikman walking away in a Super Bowl year. But if he becomes sufficiently disillusioned with the situation, it canât be ruled out.
Much of it depends on whether any of the apparent animosity makes its way into a broadcast. For now, it hasnât. But everyone whoâs aware of the situation (and, frankly, many who watch Monday Night Football arenât and wonât be) will be watching and listening for any hint in any stray comment or pointed remark.
Ultimately, it takes two to tango in any employment relationship. And if the two sides know the music will stop once the confetti falls in L.A. on Valentineâs Day, a premature record scratch is possible.
In some respects, itâs already happening.
