  QB2
Posted by: MaroonBells - 07-31-2025, 07:04 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (10)

I made a prediction a couple months ago that Rypien would make the final roster. Some found it hard to believe the Vikings would keep a 29 year old career backup as QB3 over a developmental youngster like Brosmer. They wouldn't. I think Brosmer's got QB3 sewn up. Rypien isn't in a battle for QB3; he's in a battle for QB2. And I think there's a chance he wins and Howell is out.

Sounds like I'm no longer the only one who thinks this. The Athletic's Alec Lewis picked Rypien over Howell in his latest roster prediction. Either way, based on nothing but tea leaves and what I know about Howell, I think the competition is closer than people think. I also think there's a chance the Vikings QB2 is not on the roster yet.

Lewis on Howell:
The best way to sum up Howell’s performance is a beat too slow. Without the post-practice film, it’s impossible to assess each rep accurately. Is Howell taking a hitch because he’s not seeing the picture correctly, or is he waiting a split second extra because the receiver was rerouted by a cornerback? Whatever the case, it feels fair to say that Howell hasn’t consistently pulled the trigger promptly."

I hope Viking Nation can be patient....
Posted by: StickierBuns - 07-31-2025, 04:11 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (8)

Not talking this board, pretty level headed here with long time fans that understand patience. But for the rest, especially the 30 and under crowd? Not so sure. New players at important positions, units that need to gel, etc. it all takes time and reps. So much micromanaging play to play online of these young podcasters/online 'reporters'/Twitter engagement guys trying to make enough money following the Vikings that they can make it their jobs. Its almost like a self contained job justification as the same dudes respond to each others 'reports'. I think the team is talented, but its going to take some time and games to get to their best level (probably can be said for most teams). They'll be inconsistent in areas like QB, the secondary and offensive line for awhile. This narrative that JJ is being plunked down into the seat of smooth, all cylinders firing F1 racing car is inaccurate as it stands right now....but they'll get there. The O-line is currently giving him zero time in practice to throw.

I'm pissing into the wind even writing this because stopping overreaction online, both good and bad, is like stopping the sun from rising. Its inevitable and constant. Yet here I am doing it anyway.....so I guess the dumb one is the guy in the mirror. Wink

I have a feeling they are going to regret letting Parker Romo go and keeping Reichard.

Vikings to Wear Helmet Decal Honoring Jim Marshall
Posted by: greediron - 07-30-2025, 03:08 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (1)

https://www.vikings.com/news/mark-wilf-h...lmet-decal

In his opening comments, Wilf also mentioned two Vikings Legends and announced the team plans to wear a helmet decal this season in honor of 14-time captain Jim Marshall, who passed away June 3 at age 87.

"No player in this team's history lived the ideals of toughness, camaraderie, passion and leadership more than Jim. He was a quiet but effective leader," Wilf said. "In our minds, he's the greatest captain in NFL history, and there is no question he also belongs in the Hall of Fame for what he accomplished over his 20-year career.

"We plan to honor Jim with a helmet decal throughout the 2025 season and are working on plans to recognize him and his family during Legends Weekend when we face the Bengals in September," Wilf added.

The Wilfs sure know what they are doing culture wise with the team. It isn't hard, but some owners just don't get it. Play in the now, build for the future, but remember the past.

RIP to the rock of the PPE.

  So..which Okudah do we see?
Posted by: badgervike - 07-30-2025, 11:58 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (6)

Sure fire prospect when he was drafted 3rd overall or the oft injured much maligned CB on his 4th NFL team at age 26?  The Vikings seem eerily content with their CB room.  The Dolphins took Mike Hilton, Jack Jones off the board yesterday.  Flores has been pimping Okudah (and Rodgers) and there is no outward signs that we're going to add to a CB room that looks questionable on paper.

From SI.com:

https://www.si.com/nfl/vikings/news/can-...ry-vikings

They play completely different positions, but the similarities between Sam Darnold and Jeff Okudah, at least in terms of career arc, are hard to ignore.

Darnold was the No. 3 overall pick in 2018. He earned the bust label after a poor three years with the Jets and wound up traded before the end of his rookie contract. Darnold bounced around a bit more and then ended up signing a cheap one-year deal with the Vikings as his fourth team, entering his seventh season.

Okudah was the No. 3 overall pick in 2020. He earned the bust label after a poor three years with the Lions and wound up traded before the end of his rookie contract. Okudah bounced around a bit more and then ended up signing a cheap one-year deal with the Vikings as his fourth team, entering his sixth season.

Last year, Kevin O'Connell and his staff — as well as the Vikings' offensive environment — helped get an incredible career year out of Darnold. This year, they hope Brian Flores, Daronte Jones, and the defensive environment in Minnesota can do the same for Okudah.

The early returns have been promising. Okudah, still just 26 years old, has been working with the first-team defense as the CB3 behind Byron Murphy Jr. and Isaiah Rodgers. That's a role that would come with significant playing time if he holds onto it. His physicality and athleticism have shown up on the field in practices, and every indication is that he's working extremely hard to try to revive his career.

"It's hard to say without being in each building," Flores said when asked why he thinks Okudah has bounced around the league. "I know, in his time here, he's been as diligent from on the field, off the field, training room, weight room. He's always looking to do extra film work. I don't know what's happened in other buildings. I know that since he's been here, it's been great to coach him."

"I think he's getting better," Flores added. "I think he's getting more comfortable within the defense and what we're gonna ask him to do. And he's shown up positively, really in every way. I'm excited to watch him continue to improve. I think he's got a lot of skill, that's why he was drafted so high. But again, I can't speak for what else has happened, and honestly, I don't want him to think about that. I want him to think about making some improvement today and trying to put his best foot forward at all times."

Okudah came out of Ohio State in 2020 looking like a sure-thing cornerback prospect with size, speed, strength, explosiveness, and sticky coverage ability. But the first five years of his career didn't go to plan.

He struggled in coverage as a rookie under Matt Patricia, then tore his Achilles in the 2021 opener and missed the entire season. Okudah showed some progress as a starter on the 2022 Lions, but Detroit still elected to trade him for a fifth-round pick the next offseason. He was fairly mediocre with the Falcons in '23, then signed with the Texans last year and missed a big chunk of the season with a hip injury, which kept him from earning a role in Houston's defense.

But again, he's only 26. And if there's any coach and organization that can unlock some degree of potential from a player with all kinds of athletic tools, it might be Brian Flores and the Vikings.

Okudah has always played with physicality; Justin Jefferson described him as "annoying" to face earlier this offseason. He'll jam receivers off of their routes in press, like he did to Jordan Addison on a recent practice rep that led to J.J. McCarthy throwing an interception. Okudah is also a strong run defender and tackler. The key that will determine how he fares in Minnesota is his technique (and consistency) in coverage.

If he struggles in that area, Mekhi Blackmon will be lurking as a replacement in the CB3 role. But if Okudah is able to figure it out in Minnesota, he could have a lesser version of the Darnold career revival year for the Vikings in 2025.

  Padded Practice Highlights
Posted by: purplefaithful - 07-28-2025, 07:31 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (23)

In the first padded practice of training camp, the Vikings defensive line appeared to turn up the heat on young quarterback J.J. McCarthy and a retooled offensive line.

“This defensive line has the looks to be probably the best I’ve been around. ... Jon Allen has a heck of a lot left in the tank, I’ll tell you that,” right tackle Brian O’Neill said. “...

McCarthy met Allen, the 30-year-old former Pro Bowler who was cut by Washington this offseason, in the backfield a couple times.

Edge rushers Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel also applied ample pressure that left observers, including injured receiver Justin Jefferson, wanting to see more from the offense at times.

Cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. enjoyed a little less mileage downfield.

“I was like, ‘Man, I don’t really need to cover too long,’” Murphy said.

Will J.J. McCarthy be ready?

McCarthy’s longest completion in team drills went about 20 yards to receiver Lucky Jackson, playing the No. 3 role with Jordan Addison and Jalen Nailor while Jefferson (hamstring) is sidelined. The pass had the kind of touch and trajectory that head coach Kevin O’Connell said he’s looking for from McCarthy, who often threw one way at Michigan: hard.

O’Connell said coaches are focused on creating open throwing lanes for McCarthy, but that his touch as a passer is also a work in progress.
“Where there’s a void and there’s a vacancy,” O’Connell said Saturday, “but there might be a defender in front and a defender behind, and we’ve got to find a way to get that ball completed. That’s probably the biggest difference between college football and the NFL, at least with a lot of the passing attacks that I’m familiar with.”

“He’s working on different trajectories,” O’Connell added. “You’re still seeing the [high] revolutions on the ball, but not that heavy finish, more so that up-and-down two-ball feel that we kind of talk about.”

Will the offensive line heal and coalesce?

New guard Will Fries, the prize of this year’s free-agent spending spree, showed off his progress by returning to full-team reps on Monday.

Left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who suffered two torn ligaments in his left knee last season, is expected to return to team drills later this week, O’Neill told the Minnesota Star Tribune. When Darrisaw returns, the Vikings will finally practice with their new offensive line that also features center Ryan Kelly, who, like Fries, came from the Colts.

Fries said he and Kelly have “built-in chemistry” as they learn a new system together.

“He helped me along the way since I wasn’t able to practice much during the spring. ... With him learning it, too, and us kind of figuring it out together, it’s been invaluable so far,” Fries added.

Rookie Donovan Jackson, the 24th overall pick out of Ohio State, has taken every rep with the first-team offense as coaches prepare him to be the starting left guard.

How good will this defensive front be?

You can count Vikings defensive tackle Harrison Phillips among those excited about the retooled D-line that includes new Pro Bowl-caliber big men Allen and Javon Hargrave. Phillips, a team captain last year, thinks they’ll get more out of everyone now.

“The three of us are older players,” Phillips said this spring, “so I think anytime you can go out there and platoon in three- to five- to six-play roles, you can really attack with waves, and because of the depth we have, we’ll truly have waves we can throw.”

Defensive coordinator Brian Flores sees a deep D-line, too, but he tempered expectations until he sees what Greenard, Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner can do with an interior group that expects next steps from reserves like Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez and Taki Taimani.

“Only time will tell,” Flores said Monday. “We’ve got a group that works extremely hard. There’s a lot of talent in the room. I think we know the names like Harrison Phillips, Hargrave and Jonathan Allen, but we’re excited about some of our younger players. ... A lot of guys that can go out there and play at a high level.”

Will Aaron Jones, Jordan Mason pack a punch?

The Vikings’ offseason cash purge was aimed, in part, to give their rushing attack some finishing power. Despite Aaron Jones’ success last year, the Vikings finished with nine rushing touchdowns and have just 16 rushing scores over the last two years, ranking 31st in the NFL. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah traded for 49ers bulldozer Jordan Mason, giving him a two-year, $10.5 million deal after also re-signing Jones to two years and $20 million.

The Vikings view Mason as a “really complete player,” offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said, despite the 26-year-old runner having just 14 catches through three NFL seasons. He may give the Vikings a strong tandem in the backfield once again.

“We’ve got a better front overall, we feel like,” Phillips said. “Bringing in a guy like Jordan Mason to pair along with Aaron is something we’re really excited about. There is a noticeable size difference when you look at the line ... I think you kind of see that on both of our fronts. ... Already you’ve seen some good battles between those guys.”
