  Will is a thrill...

Ryan Longwell played 96 games over six seasons as a Viking (2006-11). He went 11 of 17 on field goal attempts of 50-plus.

Well, guess what. Will Reichard has played 19 games over two seasons and he just made his 12th field goal of 50-plus.

When the Vikings turned first-and-10 at the Philly 19 into fourth-and-32, Reichard, ho-hum, nailed the 59-yarder. He’s 11 of 17 from 50-plus in his career, including 9 of 10 this year. His only miss – a 51-yarder in London – might have hit a “spider wire” that controls the camera above the field.

Reichard was asked Sunday if it was “crazy” that 59-yarders are now considered “easy.” “Well,” said the flatline kicker, “they aren’t easy.” He only makes them look that way. He’s 3 of 3 this year on field goals of 59 or longer, including a franchise-record 62-yarder

  Things that I think...

After watching the debacle at US Bank Stadium, what I think this week...

  • Wentz is definitely not the answer.  If he had a good game yesterday, he could have had us at 3-1 in his tenure.  Instead, it was multiple mistakes.  He has shown flashes, but not enough flashes to be a NFL #1 QB at this stage.  Could that change?  Not for me to judge...it is what it is and my eyes do not deceive.
  • Time for JJM to get healthy and let's see what's under the hood...good or bad.  We're not going to the Super Bowl this year.
  • Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes.  You cannot make that kind of dumb mistakes and win in the NFL.  They don't make up for gaudy numbers elsewhere.
  • Draft day 2024...I was a huge Bo Nix fan.  I still am.  The Broncos got a good young'un.  And they're 5-2, in first in the AFC West.
  • Jalen Redmond...outperforming either Hargrave or Allen.  He's a beast...bull strong.
  • Addison makes Jefferson better...and Addison has great moves and hands.  For those who want us to move on from Addison because of his lapses in judgement...look at the box score from yesterday.
  • Really disappointed in Thielen's performance or even being targeted.  I was hoping for more.
  • Mason should be RB1 when Jones comes off IR.  But I still believe Jones>Scott (although I like Scott's flashes)
  • The KOC QB University continues to prove itself, but it also needs good students. Danny Dimes, Sammy Darnold.  Both with QB rating this season ahead of Mahomes, Goff, Mayfield, Love, Hurts, Stafford, Herbert, Allen and most others...They are sitting at #2 and #3 in that rating for the season to date.
  • Our D is better with Blake Cashman in there.  We held all-world RB Barkley to 44 yards.  We outgained Eagles on the ground.
  • I think it is too early to kick Brandel to the curb at C.  He had never played the position before last week.  He had a glaring snap over the head of 6'5" Wentz...but I think he has more potential at the position than we saw yesterday.  Muscle memory snapping the ball?  None.  Give him time...he could still be a valuable asset with versatility at all five OL positions.  Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
  • Eric Wilson > Ivan Pace Jr, or so it appears
  • I loved BFlo's creativity in stopping the Tush Push.  I guess there's no rule about lining up laying on the ground.  Our D was totally queued up to bark out their OL jumping the snap.
  • It was great to see Dirty Harry getting way more snaps.  He had 4 solo tackles and a TFL
  • Was Hock robbed on that TD?  Looking at the replays (multiple), unfortunately, I think the ref's got that one right...I think.  Could have easily gone the other way too.  The solution?  Don't throw it so far away from your target that he has to make an aerial acrobatic move to snag it.
  • As good as Isaiah Rodgers was against the Bengals, he whiffed multiple times yesterday.  What goes up must come down.

I believe he's eligible to come off IR for the Charger game...

Another weapon who can bring some juice and flexibility, spell Mason some.

Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died. He was 36.

“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time,” his family said in a statement to Fox Sports.

Martin was picked 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft after a standout career at Boise State. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie to earn a Pro Bowl berth. He had 1,402 yards rushing and six TDs in 2015 when he made the Pro Bowl and was first-team All-Pro.

Martin finished his career with 5,356 yards rushing and 30 TDs in six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders. He also had 148 catches for 1,207 yards and two scores.

The Buccaneers issued a statement, saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. … Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

Martin was selected one of the top 50 players in franchise history as part of the team’s 50 year anniversary celebration.

Demoted for good??

What the heck happened? I guess it was Wilson

Heading into facing the league's reigning leading rusher and the purveyors of the "Tush Push", the Minnesota Vikings entered Week 7 with the 24th-ranked run defense in the NFL. Apart from finding a way to stop the most unstoppable play the league has seen in a while, containing Saquon Barkley was going to be critical.

While the Vikings did not beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, they did hold Barkley to 44 yards on 18 carries. The return of a key piece of the defense who hasn't played since Week 1 was surely helpful to that effort, even if linebacker Blake Cashman didn't light up the stat sheet (six total tackles).

Eric Wilson stepped into a big role when Cashman was out, starting all four of those games and playing every defensive snap in three of them. He also played well enough to possibly keep a prominent defensive role when Cashman returned to action.

But playing time is a zero-sum game. If someone is returning from injury at a position, or someone has proven they deserve more playing time, someone else is in line to lose playing time.

Minnesota Vikings bench Ivan Pace Jr. against Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7

A missed tackle rate approaching 16 percent (15.9 percent) coming into the game against the Eagles, and general struggles easily revealed by the eye test, led to the idea that Ivan Pace Jr. would have a reduced role when Cashman returned. In that scenario, Wilson would remain a starter.

According to Pro Football Focus (h/t to Tyler Forness of AtoZ Sports), Cashman played all 50 of Minnesota's defensive snaps against the Eagles, and Wilson played 42.

With the variable alignments defensive coordinator Brian Flores uses, there isn't always a lot of room for another typical off-ball linebacker to play a lot. On Sunday, safety Josh Metellus lined up as a linebacker more often than he did in previous games.

That left Pace, who did not play a single defensive snap as the odd man out--all the way out, in fact, at least for one game. He was relegated strictly to special teams duty, and perhaps uncoincidentally, the Vikings' run defense was notably better.

Cashman is often overlooked as a critical factor in the success of the Vikings' defense. He was impactful in how Barkley was held in-check on Sunday, but his return to action also led to things aligning more ideally in terms of how linebacker snaps were doled out.

And with that, even with some accounting for matchups and a short week before taking on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, Pace's days as a primary part of the Vikings' defense might be done.

  Weekly Sunday Observations

Well.....3-3 and in sole possession of last place in the NFCN. And no closer to knowing when JJ McCarthy will be back starting. Fun stuff!  Sad

  • What a brutal and epic way for the NY Giants to blow that lead and lose to the Broncos. So gross.
  • Just go ahead and start your draft boards in Vegas, Miami, NY Jets, Tennessee and New Orleans. Even garbage says these teams are garbage.
  • So much for the Chargers being a 'super team' lead by the 'best coach in the NFL'. The media crowned 'em after Week 1. Can't they just be led by a pretty damn good QB and a pretty darn good HC? Colin Cowherd had them in the Superbowl 3 weeks ago.
  • The Redskins have come back down to earth....
  • Drake Maye is on a nice roll, playing calmly and very effectively. It helps to have the cakiest of the cake schedules but I'm going back my week to week mantra and he's playing excellent for a 2nd year dude recently.
  • I'm not seeing it with Caleb Williams. Its a win, even against the Saints, but its so meh with him.
  • Green Bay should have lost that game....Jordan Love? Played just ok. Another player to keep an eye on as far as is his arrow going up or not?
  • McCaffrey goes off and the 49ers roll.....Atlanta is very much a hot and cold team.
  • The NFL just continues to be unpredictable week to week. Parity rules.

Vikings have turned the ball over 89 times since 2022. Tied with Colts and Titans. Only team with more is the Browns (100).

  Red Zone ineptitude
Posted by: StickierBuns - 10-20-2025, 03:54 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (13)

That was brutal. Will the Thrill kept Minnesota in punching distance but you need some TDs in the red zone. Would have been a completely different game. Penalties and turnovers AGAIN just killing the team. The refs and New York messed the Vikings up: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/4665...overturned

Not sure what Wentz was thinking a few times, made a few truly boneheaded plays. So many squandered scoring opportunities. Carson couldn't hit Jefferson with the side of a barn. And Hurts had so much time....brutal.

I mean....like I said yesterday before the game....anyone excited about continuing to watch Wentz? For the last place Vikings in the NFCN? And additionaly: if you get to play the Saints, Jets, Raiders, Dolphins or Titans, kiss the schedule maker because those teams SUCK out loud.
