Monday Morning Digest: Quarterback Fear Factor
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-22-2017, 11:05 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (1)

  1. With the regular season just three weeks away, it's time to be very, very afraid.
    • The Colts must fear starting the season without their starting quarterback. And they aren't alone.
    • The Broncos must fear there will be no clear winner of their quarterback competition. And they aren't alone.
    • Blake Bortles must fear losing his starting job. And he isn't alone.
    • The Seahawks must fear their offensive line is coming unglued. Again.
    • The Raiders must fear their secondary is coming unglued. Again.
    • If you look up in the sky Monday afternoon, you may go permanently blind. That's also scary.
If you aren't afraid, then you haven't been paying attention to the preseason. Luckily, Digest is here to bring you all of the action, excitement and reasons to lie awake at night.

  SKOL Show: The Blog version
Posted by: KyVikesFan11 - 08-22-2017, 10:29 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (2)

With my schedule ive been unable to record a show over the past few weeks, but I wanted to get some thoughts out there.  Here are some thoughts on Teddy Bridgewater returning and what it may mean to the team.  The battle at left guard, which I posted about earlier, inspired me to write the blog to begin with.  Lastly, there are some comments on some big time rookies standing out on the defensive side.  You can check it out here....

  Easton or Boone?
Posted by: KyVikesFan11 - 08-22-2017, 05:09 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (24)

Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of Alex Boone.  My opinions on who should start at LG are probably a little bias just based on the fact that I simply don't like Boone.  With that said, I think Nick Easton is making a case to take his job.  I realize it was only one preseason game, but the starting OL unit looked as good as we've seen in quite some time.  I'm all for a complete overhaul of a the worst unit in football over the past 2 seasons.  Sure, Boone was one of the better pieces of the line, but he still wasn't good.  Reiff/Hill, Easton, Elflein, Berger, Remmers would make 5 new starters along the line.  As long as Reiff returns, you're going to have some pretty good depth with Sirles, Hill and Isadora.
At the end of the day, I do think Boone will start just based on his salary alone.  He has a pretty good size dead cap number, so i dont think he will be cut and im not sure anyone would trade for him.  Just based on his contract though, I do expect this will be his last season with the team.  He has 0 dead money after this year.  Baring a major step up in his play, of course.  The coaches have been saying they are going to play the 5 best guys.  I will be interested to see if they see Boone as a better option than Easton.  I'm not sure he is?

NFL, Roger Goodell finalizing five-year extension
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-21-2017, 11:53 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (8)

The NFL is close to finalizing a deal that would extend the tenure of Commissioner Roger Goodell through the 2024 season, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday, citing a person informed of the talks.
Goodell, 58, succeeded Paul Tagliabue in September of 2006. He first joined the league as an intern back in 1982.
Goodell's tenure has been one of the most eventful for a commissioner in recent history. From the continued effort to make football safer to sweeping changes in how the game is officiated, reviewed and even watched on multiple platforms by fans, Goodell has been atop the league's masthead for a period of booming popularity and change.
The deal would make Goodell present through the end of the league's current collective bargaining agreement, which expires following the end of the 2020 season.
Garafolo reported Monday that the deal should be completed following the resolution of a few "minor issues." Around The NFL will have more on the pact as news becomes available.

RS: Recent contract extensions triggered by 'significant' decisions ahead at QB
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-21-2017, 10:32 PM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

The Minnesota Vikings have one of the more interesting salary-cap situations in the NFL, in that they have their two biggest-name quarterbacks — for now, anyway — set to become free agents after this season.
That’s why general manager Rick Spielman felt the need to be so aggressive in terms of re-signing other key pieces of the team before it could deal with the looming question of who its quarterback will be after this season. Following a busy offseason signing outside free agents, the Vikings turned inward and locked up DE Everson Griffen, CB Xavier Rhodes and DT Linval Joseph to extensions over a two-week period.
Spielman spoke with PFW on Monday and said the team felt its unique situation forced the team to look ahead — even more so than normal and even going against its past practices — when it came to future salary-cap planning.

Why the poor coverage on Friday is actually a good thing
Posted by: greediron - 08-21-2017, 09:56 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (9)

Borrowing some from this superb breakdown of some Viking coverage breakdowns.
http://vikingsterritory.com/2017/analysi...-secondary

Rhodes was in excellent coverage, just lost out to an amazing catch.  Alexander was fooled badly by the underrated Baldwin, who is similar to our Adam Theilen, a master of route running.

So Alexander has work to do and this was a good baptism by fire for the youngster.  hopefully he can learn, forget and carry on growing into the position.  I expect that will be our weakness on D this year and may be a bit frustrating at times.

But what I really want to highlight, and I have touched on it in other threads, some of the issues were due to us having a great coach.  Instead of resting on his laurels and waiting for offenses to catch up to him, he forges ahead.  2 years ago it was the double A gap pressure.  Last year that faded away and BRob was the joker, learning offensive protection calls and then exploiting them on the field.

This year, he is changing up some coverages.

Quote: the Vikings were toying with new coverages during the game, which may have led to the blown assignments.
“We were working on some different coverages in that game,” Zimmer said. “I think we need to continue to get that,” he added.
He has used pattern matching concepts already, but it sounds like he is testing new ideas.  Maybe they weren't quite right, maybe the guys didn't fully trust them yet, but that is part of being on the cutting edge.  And it was only preseason.  So instead of playing vanilla, Zimmer is mixing up some crazy flavors to see what works.  At first I was thinking, why tell people that?  But then I wonder, well it puts doubt in the offensive minds as they attempt to figure out how to attack the Vikings.  You know Green Bay is working to solve the riddle that has really slowed their offense down.  So now they have a bit more to work on without knowing exactly what they are looking for.  That is why I love our coach.

It seems the Seahawks can't get enough of broken down, has been, never was former Vikings.  Tyrus Thompson, from my limited memories of him he had decent talent with below average want to.
