Rhodes hyped for Peterson but knows Brees, Thomas will be a challenge
Posted by: purplefaithful - 09-06-2017, 02:09 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (2)

Every time Adrian Peterson’s name is mentioned to a Minnesota Vikings defender, the answer is basically the same: Can’t wait to tackle him.
Vikings No. 1 cornerback Xavier Rhodes had the same sentiment on Tuesday, saying that he and the future Hall of Fame running back had something of a rivalry even when they were on the same team.

“There’s definitely a lot of pride,” Rhodes said. “I have to come down with the tackle. He knows when he was here we had a couple conversations and I told him that I’m not going to back down from him. He told me, ‘We’re gonna see how that ends,’ so we’re definitely going to see how that ends Monday night.”

Vikings, Brock confident NFL won’t suspend cornerback for domestic abuse charge

Vikings, Brock confident NFL won’t suspend cornerback for domestic abuse chargeVikings cornerback Tramaine Brock and coach Mike Zimmer said Tuesday they are confident the NFL will not punish the new defensive back after California prosecutors last month dismissed domestic violence charges against him.
On Saturday, Minnesota traded a seventh-round draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Brock, presumably for him to compete with second-year nickel corner Mackensie Alexander, who struggled to nail down the job in the preseason.

Tramaine Brock has the experience at nickel the Vikings need
Posted by: purplefaithful - 09-06-2017, 02:03 AM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

Mike Zimmer isn’t sure when Tramaine Brock will get up to speed, both mentally and physically, but he says he’s sure the 29-year-old cornerback could help the Vikings in the slot if necessary.
“He’s played nickel a lot,” Zimmer said Tuesday. “Played nickel in Seattle the whole time he was there and he played [outside] corner in San Francisco.”
The Vikings sent a seventh-round pick to Seattle last week for Brock, who did get a chance in 2015 to defend the slot for the 49ers when starter Jimmie Ward went down. Brock is currently nursing a groin injury, according to Zimmer, preventing any immediate impact.
“I thought that his cover skills were good in the things that he had done in the last year,” Zimmer said, “and his ability to do the things that we do defensively.”

Why Alex Boone was no longer a good fit in the Vikings' offense
Posted by: purplefaithful - 09-06-2017, 01:58 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (16)

Why Alex Boone was no longer a good fit in the Vikings' offenseTeddy Bridgewater injury set in motion lineman's release by Vikings. So what happened to change the landscape for the former prized free agent? Well, a lot.
Let’s start with the sea change the Vikings have undergone on offense since signing Boone: Teddy Bridgewater sustained a catastrophic knee injury, precipitating a trade for Sam Bradford. Adrian Peterson tore his right meniscus, rendering moot the downhill power runs that offensive coordinator Norv Turner favored and Boone relished. And after Turner resigned in the middle of last season, the Vikings turned the offense over to Pat Shurmur — Bradford’s coordinator in St. Louis and Philadelphia who favored more West Coast offensive principles and a zone-running scheme.
What’s the difference? Rather than relying on powerful offensive linemen such as Boone to move large chunks of earth, zone schemes lean more on quick, mobile linemen who can work as a unit and create opportunities for running backs to make one cut up the middle of the field, bend a run outside or bounce it back into a cutback lane...

What do you think?  Love them or hate them? I'm no fan of either Viking helmet, but some of them are improvements.

Scoggins: Vikings' Spielman is low on chips in high-stakes roster game
Posted by: purplefaithful - 09-05-2017, 11:31 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (50)

Scoggins: Vikings' Spielman is low on chips in high-stakes roster gameRecent roster moves show that the Vikings general manager is feeling real pressure to deliver a winner this season and can't afford to sit patiently and hope that things improve.Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of Rick Spielman’s bold but necessary trade for Sam Bradford in a Hail Mary attempt to save the Vikings’ 2016 season after Teddy Bridgewater’s devastating knee injury.
In the pecking order of Spielman’s personnel decisions last season, nothing comes close to acquiring a starting quarterback at the cost of a first-round pick. His next three most important moves were signing free-agent guard Alex Boone and drafting receiver Laquon Treadwell in the first round and cornerback Mackensie Alexander in the second round.
Now fast-forward one year.
Spielman cut Boone on Saturday, leaving $3.4 million in dead money on the team’s tab. Spielman also traded for veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock over the weekend, presumably as insurance because Alexander has yet to prove he can handle the nickel-corner job. In May, Spielman took a gamble on wide receiver Michael Floyd after Treadwell contributed next-to-nothing in his rookie season.
Those moves show that the Vikings general manager is feeling real pressure to deliver a winner this season and can’t afford to sit patiently and hope that things improve.
The Vikings haven’t won a playoff game since 2009. Their 2016 season became an epic unraveling. No doubt the Wilf ownership expects to see substantial improvement and signs that the organization is on a championship trajectory in a season that will end with the Super Bowl extravaganza being held in their new home.
This is a critical season for Spielman’s operation, which puts those aforementioned moves into context...

3 rookie starters for the Vikings

Pretty crazy that Lamur or Robinson couldn't win the starting WLB job.....Gedeon is really a MLB. But good for him to snag it.
