  What does RS do...
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-16-2017, 01:04 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (15)

IF Case keeps playing well enough not to be removed from qb1, wins 12,13, 14 games? Goes on a deep playoff run & Bridgewater never gets more than some mop-up time?

What does he do with Case and not just Teddy? Sign em both-up (if he can) to short-term, incentive laden contracts?

Vikings offensive line wil face its toughest test vs. Rams
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-16-2017, 02:22 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (4)

The Minnesota Vikings’ offensive line has been most responsible for the team’s most dynamic and explosive offense. But this Sunday at US Bank Stadium will mark the first time they face off with one of the league’s elite defensive lines.
Los Angeles ranks fifth in the NFL in sacks with 29 and has allowed a 73.3 quarterback rating against. Five of those sacks have come from defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who the highest ranked player in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.
“Their front is one of the best in the league and I’ve been around it first hand so I know exactly how good those guys are,” quarterback Case Keenum said. “There’s a guy Aaron Donald, if you know him, I think he’s underrated. Even if he’s player of the year, rookie of the year, I still think he’s underrated because he’s that good.”
Award voters haven’t underrated Donald. He’s been named All First-Team Associated Press, Pro Football Writers and Sporting News over the last two years and named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons.
“He’s really quick,” head coach Mike Zimmer said. “He gets on the edges of guys and gets them turned and that’s where they’re making a lot of hay.”
“You try and get two hands on him as much as possible,” Zimmer added. “You get him on the ground as much as you can – trap him, cut him.”

  Kyle Sloter contract question?
Posted by: minny65 - 11-16-2017, 01:49 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (4)

I am confused about Sloter's contract.  According to Spotrac he is only signed for this year at $465,000 when we signed him from the Broncos PS.

But I am hearing some folks saying that he has signed a 3 year contract.

I rely on Spotrac so I assume it is accurate.  I notice below the current contract information that the Broncos had signed Sloter to a 3 year deal as an UDFA so I am thinking that is where the confusion is in thinking we have him under contract beyond this season.

So what information do others have in regards to Sloter?

I am thinking we don't currently have any QB's under contract for next year.

Case Keenum's start vs. Rams is anything but 'another game' on Vikings' schedule
Posted by: purplefaithful - 11-16-2017, 12:34 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (10)

Winners of five straight games with Case Keenum at quarterback, the Vikings decided there was no reason to change what’s been working before Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Coach Mike Zimmer announced Wednesday that Keenum will start against the Rams, facing his former team in a matchup of 7-2 clubs vying for a first-round bye. Keenum, who’s 5-2 as a starter this season and helped the Vikings start their winning streak on Oct. 8 by relieving an injured Sam Bradford in Chicago, will keep the job while Teddy Bridgewater spends another week as his backup.
Zimmer said the deliberations about starting Keenum at quarterback were “not difficult,” adding Keenum’s play on Sunday — when he threw for a career-high four touchdowns and 304 yards along with two interceptions in a win over the Redskins — was “part of” the reason he’s getting another start on Sunday.
The decision means Keenum will square off against the team for whom he started 14 games over the past two seasons. He started the first nine games of the season for the Rams a year ago, before giving way to Jared Goff. Now, the two quarterbacks will face off on Sunday with playoff positioning at stake.

  Defensive Struggles
Posted by: JimmyinSD - 11-15-2017, 08:25 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (25)

Somebody the other day was complaining about the defense surrendering points and their concerns about that being an issue worth discussing.  I suggested starting a new thread but it didnt happen... but it does raise and interesting question considering the timing of the defensive downturn.  last year it was about this time that the D started to struggle and it was blamed on the offensive woes and the cumulative effect of the D being left on the field to much ( which I disagreed with based on our offensive time of possession being respectable)  now this year we are seeing even better offensive production on the score board,  but once again we are seeing our D start slow,  and in recent games give up more points than many fans think they should.

what say you.. is there a reason to be concerned?

I wonder if Minneapolis wants a Home Team Super Bowl
Posted by: Jor-El - 11-15-2017, 06:53 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (17)

Walking around USB Stadium yesterday, I allowed myself to fantasize about the Vikings potentially hosting SB52. If you're downtown much, you see a lot of signs the businesses are excited about the game. (I think they might be expecting a bit too much, but that's another topic.) My first thought was that it would be ideal if the Vikings made it to this year's SB. But then I started wondering about that.

A lot of attendees at any SB are neutral - it's just a party. I suspect some don't even watch the NFL regularly. Those won't matter. But aside from those, imagine if half the fans are from Minnesota: fewer hotel rooms, less air travel, fewer meals eaten downtown, maybe less parking because local people would take trains or bus. All the people hoping to rent their house to visitors for big $$ would have fewer customers.

I would like to think home state pride would make Minneapolis business owners glad of the Vikings' success, but I think many are hoping for other teams in the game.

WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM CASE?
Posted by: PapaScott - 11-15-2017, 06:51 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (79)

WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT FROM CASE?

Should have beat the Lions?
He matched Matthew Staffords game.  I’ve looked at the play by play and rewatched the game.
Here’s a recap.
Down 3  going into the 2min warning, Case leads the offense down the field for a Touchdown.
Second half Vikes start with the ball moving the ball well only to have Jerrick Mckinnon and Dalvin cook running the wildcat, fumble the ball.
Next possession 1st play Dalvin Cook rushes 10 yards tears ACL fumbles the ball BACK TO BACK fumbles.  This came at the Vikings 28 yard line.  Detroit scores a TD and 2pt conversion to go up by 7.
The next offensive series for the Vikings, having just lost Cook.  1st pass play is a deep pass to Treadwell who looks to mis time his jump but replays show he was held down by D. Slay NO Flag! 2nd play is also a pass but no one is open down field so it’s a check down to Murray for 2 yards.  3rd play Pass again and once again Diggs is mugged and falls down pass incomplete.  PUNT.
The next offensive series for the Vikes, move the ball to the Detroit redzone and Miss a 39 yard field goal.  The play before the field goal attempt.  It appears that Theilen is open for a TD.  He choose to throw short of the sticks and the pass was broken up.
The Vikings get the ball again this time move the ball down field taking 8 mins and is first and goal at the 8.  2 run plays later they are 3rd and goal at the 3.  Keenum is sacked losing 11 yards.  4th down attempt is no good really nothing to blame on this play as the no one is open.
Despite 3 fumbles and a turnover on downs the Vikings would get another opportunity to tie the game with under 2 mins left.  Only to lose the ball on a fumble by Adam Theilen.

3 second half turnovers
1 turnover on downs after 1st and goal
In the second half
1 missed field goal
Starting running back, gone for the season in the second half
Back up running back, injured left the game
At least 3 No Calls on PI as stated by the announcers

This was a disappointing loss, especially after coming off a dominate win against TB in which Case had a career best game (at the time) couple that with 2 disappointing losses last year vs the Lions and needing to build up wins for a daunting 2nd half of the season.  Certainly hard to pin blame on Case or expect him to do more in light of the above negatives.

He should have beat the Steelers?
So the other loss on Case’s watch was in Pittsburgh I’m not going to take the time to dive into that game, but if I did it would be in light of the unknown surrounding Sam Bradford not sure about who got all the 1st team reps, but I’m thinking it was a late call that Bradford was unable to go. It was game 2 of the season on the road and there was not a lot of people predicting a win regardless of who was at QB.
From what I’ve seen Case has bounced back from every negative play on his part and he is doing everything that is being asked of him.  He is having the best performance from a Viking QB since Brett Favre.  What more do you expect?
