Can only guess....
On paper it would make sense to keep him for the reasons you state. But I wonder if:
1). They think he's good enough for Qb2?
2). They were ok having him part of a crowded QB room with Darnold + JJM, but not in one thats an echo chamber? IOW, a different kind of support needed now?
3). Maybe he insisted on going? Wants a change of pace moving forward?

If the Rodgers thing doesn't transpire, sign Flacco to be the backup/mentor this season and use one of those 5th round picks to draft a developmental quarterback to be the 3rd and call it a day.

This is what we should do regardless of Rodgers.

Just took a look at the QBs in the UFL and CFL, that was a waste of time.

I would have been just fine with him as Qb2 here.
This QB pick is going to land right on KOC's desk, luv to know what he's "pondering"

Flacco is still out there, but they were talking on the radio the other day about one of these QB needy teams is going to be left out in the cold without one and they could see a scenario where Flacco is offered a starting job. Count me as concerned with our QB room.

I believe that the Vikings have already identified their QB2 & have a verbal agreement with said QB. So, why the delay? They're protecting the 2026 3rd round comp pick that they're likely to earn in the SD signing. They're either waiting for one of their own UFAs to sign a qualifying contract or their waiting until 4/28 when UFAs can be signed without counting against the FA comp pick formula.
Why would a UFA agree to this agreement? Would you rather be QB2 this season for the Vikings or another team that's unlikely to make the playoffs?

Looking at that list, if it's not Rodgers, anybody else on that list floating anyone's boat? To me, it's trash. Russell Wilson isn't coming. He'll be starting somewhere. Winston is as likely to throw 4 picks in a game as he is to throw for 400 yards and I want no part of that rollercoaster or his corny pregame speeches. The Vikings better be hoping Flacco is still available if they decide to not bring in Rodgers and he isn't signed as a starter for whichever team is left holding the short straw at quarterback.
Since we seem to be in the trade business, any potential trade targets of interest? Joe Milton, Will Levis, Anthony Richardson?
