Athletic: NFL execs unfiltered on NFL free agency

The Cardinals released quarterback Kyler Murray instead of trading him, and it’s easy to see why. The team began telegraphing Murray’s exit last season when handing over the job to Jacoby Brissett, limiting its leverage in trade talks.

Some saw that as a missed chance.

“I feel like they could have done a lot of different things, but they chose not to,” one exec said. “They just wanted him off the roster, wanted to save the $19.5 million (in 2027 salary that would have become fully guaranteed this month). They did not want to mess with it. I don’t know why. They don’t have a good enough roster where that $19.5 million really matters.”

The Vikings had to feel even better about adding quarterback Kyler Murray on the cheap after seeing one of their former QBs, Kirk Cousins, command guarantees in the second year from Las Vegas. Yes, the Vikings agreed not to use the franchise tag on Murray after 2026, but that’s a problem Minnesota might welcome at this point.

“Minnesota improved,” an exec said. “I like what they did with Kyler Murray. How could you not? They have a ton of talent on offense. They have a more competitive QB room now.”

Well nobody ever accused the Cardinals of being a great organization.  Kyler was 2-3 and two of the losses were coin flips to good teams.  Jacoby was 1-11 with that squad.  I'm really curious to see how he looks playing for a team with the weapons and defense that we have.  And I'm sure he's happy to have escaped football hell in Arizona.

I think they tried to trade him but couldn't. I just don't think anyone wanted to pay his contract for a guy who's had as many injuries as he's had plus he's approaching that time where running QBs start to lose some of their athleticism and have to transition to more of a traditional passing QB skillset.

I think he just needs a good prove it year to highlight what's worth.

KM didnt walk here, he ran here...

AZ doesnt get enough shade thrown their way as an org imo. And that shade way transcends how they've managed KM over the years.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

It certainly makes one appreciate the Wilfs vs the Cardinals ownership

The Wilfs just have the shinier turd because when it comes to results, the Tweedle's are some of the worst owners in football. The Cardinals have actually been the more successful franchise in the last 21 years.

I agree the Vikings need to get over some big humps, but in what world have the Cards been more successful the last 20+ years?

5 playoff wins since 2005 including a trip to the Super Bowl. That's Wilf bro wet dream kind of stuff. Nobody cares about regular season success at this point when you can't parlay it into anything more.

They have one playoff win since 10, but yah I'm still waiting for a SB appearance...Christo, I forget they were even in one as the AZ Cardinals.

I was 16 at the last one we represented, too long.
