The Athletic: KOC doubles down on himself

For MB, he's going to like this story....

Good read and despite what some say, I think he's a good coach and I like his track record with QB's.

But...

1). I would not have gone live with this if I ran The Athletic till (if) Murray is a done deal in MN.
2). I take umbrage with this:

Despite a dramatic debut last September, J.J. McCarthy, the 10th selection in the 2024 draft, clearly isn’t regarded (by O’Connell or anyone else) as the Vikings’ long-term answer at the position.

I dont think anyone knows this is how KOC or the Vikings feel about JJM...I dont think thats true tbh.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

100% agree. I like Silver, but he’s arrogant. But it helps the narrative for his story to say that.

Bah....I been saying the same thing for weeks. Do I have to quote Lizzo to get any respect around here?  Cool

I don't think this is true either. I just think the Vikings think he needs more time..more coaching, more development, more maturity. But it would not at all surprise me if in a couple years McCarthy ends up being one of the better QBs in the league. I just hope he's still wearing purple at the time.

Dude should triple down and pass on Kyler like we passed on Rodgers, so we can stay the course with JJM Tongue

Fun article though. I agree there is upside to Kyler being here. I just hate what it's gonna cost (not dollars).

I've given the pros and cons of this a lot of thought.
I still think JJM can be the QB of the future, however...he's not seasoned yet.
This team is built to win now. A great D coach and solid personnel.
Great skill players on O.
A QB whisperer, yes, it's true.
They could go and skin their knees another season with JJM as he learns on the job.
Or they could bring in an über talented QB that has also underachieved and pair him with better talent (and coaching) than Murray had in Arizona (I think).
Let them compete...if for some reason JJM wins that competition, we win. If KM wins the job, we win.
I'm so sick of being left out of the deep playoffs...I just want to win.
The job of the Head Coach and GM isn't to train someone for the job.
It's to win and win now.
This is a smart move that (I hope) lands in our lap at the League Minimum.

You could take the various backhands he's given JJM at pressers over the last few months as a sign.  The fact this move is happening at all pretty much tells you it's over for JJM in Minnesota.  If Murray does well they will sign him up for more.  If he fails KOC is out of a job (unless JJM somehow comes off the bench and performs a longshot miracle) and the new regime will have nothing invested in JJM and won't be adding his 5th year option to their housecleaning.

I know the fans don't want to move off the young guy despite the horrible stats but it's clear the HC does for a variety of reasons, else we wouldn't have been doing nonstop "who's gonna be the qb?" talk for the last couple of months.

This is not the narrative that I believe is going on. I don’t believe that the team is done with JJM. I don’t think Kyler is the savior for the team. I don’t think think Kyler is the undisputed long term starter. I think KOC is under a lot of pressure to perform and just doesn’t have the time for JJM to develop at his own pace and needs a contingency plan. You don’t get years after years with no playoff wins and get to keep your job. By all accounts, the plan was that our SB window opened last year and continues for the next handful of years. I think everyone gets a “this was just a bad year where everything went wrong” mulligan. But how many of those can you get? I don’t think 10-7 with an uninspiring first round loss is going to be enough to keep his job. I think the goal of our veteran QB acquisition process is going to be the same as what’s been stated by the team. They want to add talent to the QB room, such that someone is good enough to get the team where it needs to go.

I'll say this and echo what I said before if Murray signs: its the beginning of the end of JJ McCarthy in Minnesota. Its a shame IMO. KOC has decided that JJM isnt the QB of the future for the Vikings. Murray is being brought in to be QB1, that's obvious. I'm not going to repeat ad nauseam the whys of it, everyone on the board has read those from me.

If you want to applaud KOC for 'taking a big swing' like Silver does, great....but I don't want to hear again how 'organizations fail QBs' not the other way around from O'Connell. I do believe KOC is The King right now organizationally after KAM's departure, so he deserves to do things his way. I just don't personally agree at all with this direction, but that and $5.00 will get you a Starbucks coffee.

I'm not convinced this is the beginning of the end of JJM in MN...Least I hope not.

Lets see if this Murray thing even goes down, it aint a done deal till it is - just ask The Ravens.

Lets hear all the word salads if it does happen. Then I think we'll have more to go on.

I REALLY BELIEVE KOC knew JJM wasn't ready last year.

My take is that he wanted to keep Sammy or Dimes...Kam squashed it by holding hard on rook contract at QB. Probably caused they just spent $300mm in FA.

They let Sam walk then fumbled badly on Dimes...

We didnt realize it as fans at the time, thinking 25 was a natural progression from 24 - and it wasn't. Not at all

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
