Strib: Thrill says 'f-ck it' and boots record FG anyway with ref blunder
#1
How an officiating blunder put Vikings kicker Will Reichard in Soldier Field’s record book

"Will Reichard’s maximum was set at 57 yards. The kick he faced was 53, maybe 54. Amid haste — hey, there’s a halftime show to start — officials set it up at 59. He kicked it anyway."

I wonder how often that happens, it how often they get the down wrong.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

It was insane that they just moved it back and we had to roll with it within seconds, or get a delay of game and then be totally SOL. Officials are still working the kinks out early in the season too but that was bad.

Sidenote regarding playclock- Did anyone ever hear why KO and JJM were asking for a new playclock on that one play in Chicago? The announcers didn't get it and we got a delay of game. Strange.

They never really explain why the refs moved the ball back. But yeah, 59 yards, on the road, into the wind and on a questionable surface. Good on the Babyface Assassin.

Interesting they bring up Jake Moody, who was just released this week. 49ers spent a 3rd rounder on a god damn kicker and release him two years later. Highest kicker drafted in two decades. For a team that gets as much praise as 49ers do, they sure seem to make a lot of mistakes.

As far as the re-spot...  I think the booth replay review told the refs to move it back to accurately spot where Nailor went out of bounds.  That said, they should have reset the game clock instead of making the Vikings rush to kick.  I mean all our dudes were getting set based on the original spot and then the ref just wades in and moves it back.  We should have gotten a stoppage and explanation.

I like that nickname, fits him so much.

But yeah, that was a huge hit by Will.  To have that extra yardage tacked on, the confusion going on everywhere and then nailed it.  Hopefully his confidence is rock solid now.

As to the refs.  You can't just change the spot without an explanation and giving the team time to adjust to their mistake.  Brutal.
