You gotta consider the source on this one (heavy) but they raise some interesting points....
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The Minnesota Vikings appear to be in the driver’s seat with regards to acquiring quarterback Kyler Murray, but appearances in NFL free agency can be notoriously deceiving. When Geno Smith came off the board via a trade between the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets on Tuesday, March 10, that ostensibly put Minnesota in an even stronger position to land Murray. That is because it subtracted Smith from players the Vikings could add, and removed the Jets as candidates to trade for and/or otherwise lure Murray away from Minnesota. “With the Geno Smith trade to the Jets, the Vikings appear to be the big favorite for Kyler Murray,” ESPN’s Kevin Seifert wrote on X. But New York swooping in to trade for Smith was a surprise. The cost was next to nothing, sending the Raiders a sixth-round pick in return for Smith and a seventh-rounder. But the financial implications were significant. “To facilitate the trade, the Jets and Smith agreed to a renegotiated contract, a source told ESPN. Details weren’t immediately available, but the Raiders assumed the bulk of the 2026 payout, the source said,” Rich Cimini of ESPN reported. “If the Jets had waited for [his release] at 4 p.m. Wednesday, they could’ve signed him for $1.3 million, the veterans minimum. But they would’ve faced competition for him. The Minnesota Vikings were known to be interested.” Vikings Could Lose Chance at Kyler Murray Same Way Team Lost Shot at Geno Smith The Jets surrendered a pick swap and agreed to pay more money to guarantee that Smith landed in their locker room and not elsewhere. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals owe Murray $36 million in 2026. Thus, if a team other than Minnesota comes to Arizona with an offer of a late-round draft pick and a willingness to pay $5 or $10 million of Murray’s salary next season, that would almost certainly be enough incentive for the Cardinals to trade the soon-to-be 29-year-old QB elsewhere, leaving the Vikings without Murray or Smith to challenge/replace JJ McCarthy. One franchise that potentially fits the bill of spoiler for a Minnesota-Murray union is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh won the AFC North after trading for and paying big money to extend wide receiver DK Metcalf. Then, on Monday, the Steelers traded for and extended wideout Michael Pittman Jr. at a big number. The return of QB Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 43 years old in December, to the Steelers is on the table. However, that is obviously not a longterm solution for new head coach Mike McCarthy. Pittsburgh is also reportedly interested in veteran Kirk Cousins, but his age and play level would not offer the Steelers materially different circumstances than Rodgers as the team’s starter in 2026. Thus, Pittsburgh could be a wildcard in the Murray sweepstakes up until his planned release on Wednesday afternoon. After that, the Vikings would presumably be in control of the situation, as they can offer Murray the best playing circumstances. That said, the Steelers are also have a talented roster and are also looking to win right away. Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
