Vikings re-sign QB Carson Wentz
#31
This is too easy:

Murray Qb1
JJM Qb2
Wentz 3

Max?

Poor Max, can they even practice squad the kid?

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

I've listed the issues before.  The openly defiant griddy in Dallas.  The sideline talk with KOC about him doing stuff they never agreed to do.  The baby mama absence (whether you agree or not with whether it was acceptable) which KOC griped about in nearly every presser since.  Trucking the guy out of bounds in NY for a penalty.  The secret alternate Nine personality.

I think between the on-field problems and bad performances, the constant injuries, the head case stuff, the vets on the team wanting a lot more than a developmental program, the win-now Wilfs, the office power struggle with KAM and his removal, it all adds to up to a HC who wanted out of his relationship with Junior.  And he got his way.

Wentz is the next brick in the wall, which IMO happens to be a wall between KOC and JJM.  I think their hope is he and his agent ask out so they can spin it that way and make themselves look better.  This org loves the spin more than it loves great football.   IMO he probably will ask out and get his wish.  He needs a fresh start because it's clearly turned to shit here and his HC doesn't want him anymore.  Divorce is always painful.

But if not, he can stick JJM at qb3 on the practice squad and let him do whatever he wants.  He can paint the face and get amped at guys all day long if it makes him happy.  But he isn't getting on the field unless the other two guys get simultaneously injured.

• We knew they were bringing Wentz back a month ago, and we knew it was not as the competition QB.
• While I think there's a chance JJ could be traded for the reasons mentioned above, JJ will absolutely not be released.
I never heard anything definitive on bringing back Wentz until it happened today.

You could be right that they don't want to release him if they think they can get something back in a trade.

They could keep him as QB3 too, but I don't think if I'm him that I'd want to stick around for that.  He needs a fresh start IMO, things have gotten very messy in MN for him.  JMO.

I don’t think anything is really changed here in my perspective.

While I’m open that maybe something bad happened that soured their relationship, like JJM flirted with KOC’s wife or suggested a few improvements to the offensive scheme or something, I just don’t think that’s the only explanation.

I think KOC is under the hot seat. He has to win now or new plans are going to be made with the new GM. JJM isn’t a sure thing and is an injury risk. Kyler isn’t a sure thing in this offense and is an injury risk. With KM being free and JJM being on a rookie deal, I just don’t think more insurance is bad. To be honest I’m a little bit surprised that we didn’t trade for Richardson, but I’d guess KOC wants a more stable floor.

I know everyone likes to view things in the perspective of what’s come before, but there’s just not very many examples of teams getting a Kyler level QB for free to compare to.

I posted this in another thread earlier this week....

I really want to hear from McCarthy soon. I have no idea how he's doing and a presser or Q&A will give me something to go off of.

He is either going to wilt from this pressure or rise to the occasion.

KM seems chill and a decent enough guy, hopefully he takes the kid under his wing a bit too.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

A lot of confirmation bias here. I've said I agree that there may be something to this notion of a problem between KOC and JJ. But you're throwing a lot of dots into the picture that may or may not be true, and connecting them as if they're all true. I think that's a stretch.

Ya well, we all have our theories.  What's yours?

I don't have one. Yes, I think it's possible that KOC has problems with JJ that exist outside of Xs and Os. I also think it's possible that he still believes in JJ's long-term potential and that, if he has problems, he can grow out of them as he matures. I mostly just don't believe Wentz has anything to do with it. I mean the guy wasn't even on a team a year ago.

Twice, Kevin O’Connell has endured seasons where the #Vikings used at least three starting QBs; both times, the team reacted by building a QB room with three former top-10 picks. They'll have that again in 2026, and while the team hasn't given up on J.J. McCarthy, he'll have to earn anything he gets.
