I'd submit that Baker had been on the Browns, who have a seriously warped culture and are still carrying the masseuse-perv they replaced Baker with, despite injuries and a crap record.

Darnold had started with the Jets...who are just plain lost, have been for decades.

Not the same situation.
KOC, JJM, Flores...make a good plan, or you'll be following Kwesi....

Darnold and Baker also both had four years of starts to display their skills or lack thereof prior to their pine time. McCarthy hasn't even had one year.

EDIT- Sticky beat me to it

This is why JJ needs to play this year, if its a subpar one then bench him in 2027 and make him QB2. He hasn't even played enough snaps to know anything yet nor to be judged on. He's played in 10 games. Mayfield played almost 70 games before being benched. Sam Darnold started almost 40. That's the difference IMO. And all that 'learning' happened with other teams, after the originally drafted teams gave up.

MB's admirable Vikings optimism is causing some fairly cavernous holes in his takes lately Tongue @MaroonBells

Deep down MB you gotta know benching the QBOTF after 10 starts in which the team was 6-4 is pretty goofy. For Mahomes or someone sure but... Murray? Cousins? Ugh

I do agree Murray could make us a top 4 team in NFC...So sure, fan my fan hope I guess.

But as far as signing olde Kirk? He aint coming here to back-up or to mentor.

No way thats where his head is at yet.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

It’s not about McCarthy’s wins. Yes, he went 6-4, but did you watch him? He obviously wasn’t ready, and the 6 wins had more to do with our defense than JJ McCarthy. Look, I believe in his future. I just don’t think, based on what I saw, that his future starts as early as 2026. Could it happen? You bet it could. I'm just not willing to bet Justin Jefferson's happiness and a playoff roster on that chance.

And of course the Mayfield and Darnold situations were different. Nobody said they were the same, only that a year off isn’t necessarily a death sentence. It can actually help QBs.

An optimist? I sure hope so. But in this case it’s more about me trying to get the anti Kyler kids to fully understand what we’re talking about here, because I genuinely don’t think they've really thought this thru.

I’ll repeat myself: A former #1 overall pick, who wasn’t a bust, in fact was an OROY with Pro Bowl nods, is only 28, and gives us more than the “baseline” QB play were were after. And we get THAT guy for no draft comp and a salary lower than Tai Felton’s? And all ya’ll can do is HARUMPH!!?? Are you high? Of course we want that guy!

Remember, people thought I was nuts for thinking Sam Darnold just might be successful in our offense. And before you think I love all our decisions, you might want to look up what I said about Sam Howell.

Right now, my biggest concern is that Kyler might be insulted by at the idea of a “competition.” And if that’s the case, then **** that guy! And the mini pony he rode in on.  Wink
