Payton had 'doubts' Caleb Williams would succeed in the NFL

The other thing I'll note is that my daughter and grandkids (huge Broncos fans) just flew home to Colorado this morning after a long weekend here in Montana.  One thing that became evident is that he has turned the Broncos franchise into something of relevance again.

Having said all that, I see all the pros and cons of Williams.  I'm definitely not sold on him either.  I think the Bears can own him and I'm totally fine with that.  He's emotionally unstable and has trouble recognizing things on the field quickly.  I'll just stop there, but he is not the second coming of Jim McMahon in Chicago, that's for darn sure.

I think most would have a different opinion of celebrities if they actually met them in personal setting.

That said, I still dislike him.  And I just don't understand why he would comment on a player on another team.  Seems odd.  Maybe he was asked, but the professional response would be to be mildly complementary and redirect to his own players.

At the end of the day, he's a 14 year old boy in a grown man's body. Don't forget his mock skol chant or the fact that he says he "baited" the Vikings to move up for McCarthy. He likes to think of himself as smarter than everyone else. The Williams dig is just one more example of that. Thanks Sean. You certainly are the wise one here. Because no one but YOU questioned Williams processing speed and decision making when it was in virtually every scouting report.

Lol, that pretty much sums him up.  I wonder if his years off as a TV analyst is going to get him in some trouble now that he is back in the league.  Sounds like he still wants to give his opinion on everything and forgets where he is.

But all that said, it isn't hard to look smart when you compare yourself to the bears front office.

Yikes. From today's Bears-Bills scrimmage:

SI.com: Bears Could Be Running Out of Time Trying to Fix QB Caleb Williams The former No. 1 pick continues to struggle under Ben Johnson.

https://www.si.com/nfl/bears-trying-to-f...ining-camp

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — "Ben Johnson has 23 days to clean up his offense. On Friday at Halas Hall outside Chicago, the Bears welcomed the Bills for a joint practice in the sweltering Midwestern heat. Other than the patrons watching, the thing melting quickest was the belief Chicago had suddenly found a bona fide attack behind quarterback Caleb Williams and its rookie head coach, Johnson." - Matt Verderame SI.com

Its going to take time for Caleb (and that entirely re-vampled IOL) to gel and get used to a new system...I wouldnt panic (yet) if I were a bears fan.

Media is throwing lots of gas on the fires right now.

Dunno, it is like a fairy tale. Johnson gets hired by Chicago, thereby stealing him from Detroit's offense. He self destructs in Chicago because, well, da bears. They he goes elsewhere as an OC.

Win, win, win.

"Finally, there was Williams, who was constantly holding onto the ball too long. While Buffalo’s defense deserves some credit for holding up well at times in coverage, Williams also had a plethora of snaps where he had open receivers and didn’t fire."

Gee sounds familiar.  Ben Johnson is a precision scripted offense guy and Caleb is a night at the improv featuring oh snap I missed again!  I predict more of da Bears being da Bears in 2025.

Agreed, its too early but at the same time early signs are troublesome for Chicago. Like I said before, the media is usually one of two things: too pollyanna or too harsh. IMO the problem is mentally he's not the toughest and he's emotional, so any frustrations or learning moments might linger or derail him. We'll see. I would agree there's a bit of piling on with him and the media currently.

No, the worst thing would be to leave him with a clueless coach who had no idea how to utilize his talents. Hopefully, neither strategy works.
