Payton had 'doubts' Caleb Williams would succeed in the NFL

Seems like the last defense you'd want to face with a young QB struggling to recognized pressure is a Brian Flores defense.

I agree with this...I dont think a Flores D would be Johnson's first choice Wk1

That said, the guys better bring it for a road division game - nationally televised.

The media will be either crowning Caleb's ass after this game or tossing dirt on his grave.

In as much as I agree I remember many times where our D was supposed to fluster and make young or bad QBs miserable but our defense instead got carved out or was non existent. So given it is game one and a HUGE game for both teams, I'll just wait and see what happens.

I get that. But I get that for the O-line as well. Feel good about it, but really need to see it too.

This game, this one single game, is going to have a big impact on how the NFL drafts and develops young QBs. And it probably shouldn't, but probably will, tell us a lot about the Vikings chances to contend for a Super Bowl and whether the Bears need to scuttle Williams or develop him further.

"Per Wickersham, Payton "loved" Williams's arm at USC, but "worried a little about his processing speed" and saw "too many easy completions left on the field, open receivers that Williams fails to spot quickly." Payton has a formula that weighs negative plays, which Williams had a higher number on than either Nix or No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels. Additionally, Wickersham detailed that Payton questioned how Williams would handle failure."

I despise this guy (Payton), but he might very well be right in his pre-Draft assessment of Caleb Williams. He also appears spot-on in his assessment of Bo Nix, who seems to be killing it physically and mentally on the field. There's more than one way to skin a cat as a successful QB type in the NFL, but some of those required traits are shared. And it sure doesn't seem like Caleb has those traits....and a big one is handling failure and moving on to the next play. We've seen William's frustrated hissy fits already. Stay tuned in Chicago.

Why does this come out a year later than after the draft.  If this was your rational say it then.  Otherwise it looks like you are pouncing on someone after a poor performance.  We can't say for sure whether this was a legit opinion or not or whether he just came up with it to make himself look smart.   He has a preference for weaker arm QB's with athleticism that get the ball out quick.  Drew Brees and Bo Nix are a similar profile.  In that offense I think Nix will do well -  not Brees well but he will look pretty good.   Why don't you just be happy you got Nix rather than tearing down Williams in the process.  I fully agree with O'connell that organizations fail QB's more than QB's fail organization.  You put Williams in front of a porous line with ok WR  and then let him get pounded and expect him to perform.  Its beyond stupid.  Now you put him in a completely new system, with again a porous oline and expect better results.  Put Williams in a better system with a better o-line, coaching to improve his reaction times with great wide receivers and he most likely succeeds.  Here in Minnesota prior to getting into bad habits I bet O'connell could have made him look pretty good.

Soooo many questions going into this one;

Can the DB's hold-up?
How far along is the development of JJM?
Are the trenches as improved as much as we hoped?

BIG BOY GAME!!

I disagree. I think first games of the season are the most likely to be outlier games and not reflective of the season to come. The impact on drafting and development will more likely come from the end of the season where it will be obvious if a QB has progressed or regressed.
I am still of the opinion the Vikings will handily defeat the Bears in their own den a week from Monday!
Should the Vikings lose, I don't think their chances of contending for a superbowl will be lost.

Fair. But I think for the Vikings, most people realize that this is a roster capable of contending for a championship, even with a lack of depth in the secondary. The biggest question is JJ McCarthy. While I fully expect him to make plenty of mistakes, this game could give us a pretty good idea if he's going to be capable of driving the Ferrari, even knowing that he will likely improve over the course of the season.

And that will be shown in sharp contrast to whatever Caleb Williams does. His struggles with confusion have been well documented, and this opener will be against a defense designed to confuse. This game is in Chicago, and while literally anything can happen, for Caleb to struggle, among their fans, it's going to call into question the wisdom of taking a QB 1st overall who already struggled to play from the pocket, as well as the wisdom to start him right away, not to mention the wisdom in their bewildering solo film policy, not to mention forcing a young QB who struggles with processing to learn a new offense.  And if the fans turn on him, I'm just not sure he has the mental toughness to endure something like that. It could snowball.

Could it be reversed? Could JJ struggle and Caleb shine? You bet it could. And both teams could be completely different teams 4 months from now. I just think we're going to know so much more on September 9th than we do right now.
