  This time of year is always humbling

This time of year is always humbling for us arm chair GMs.  I was really disappointed by the Vikes UDFA pick-ups a few months ago and then 3 go and make the squad.  I thought the team really liked Tocho and he doesn't make the practice squad.  I have been a fan of Edmond Robinson and he gets cut (though, admitted, I wrote that he played poorly during the exhibitions).  Last year, I was all in on Tre -- gone.  I thought Jabari was going to stick on the 53 this year -- nope.

So, I have decided to keep my day job -- though I will continue to prattle on here.

Mnuchin told "Fox News Sunday" that he’s preparing a sanctions package that would cut off “all trade and other business,” with North Korea, following the country's overnight nuclear test, its sixth and most powerful.
“I will submit new sanctions for his strong consideration,” he said. “There’s much more we can do economically.”
Such a bomb is considered more powerful than any of the five nuclear ones North Korea has already tested. And it apparently triggered an artificial earthquake of at least a magnitude 5.7.
“I did speak with the president,” Mnuchin also said Sunday. “It’s clear this behavior is unacceptable. … I will draft a sanctions bill and send it to the president. We will work with our allies. We will work with China. But people need to cut off North Korea economically."

Congratulations on a remarkable run. Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.

This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don't know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful. Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.

First, we've both been blessed, in different ways, with great good fortune. Not everyone is so lucky. It's up to us to do everything we can (to) build more ladders of success for every child and family that's willing to work hard.

Second, American leadership in this world really is indispensable. It's up to us, through action and example, to sustain the international order that's expanded steadily since the end of the Cold War, and upon which our own wealth and safety depend.

Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions -- like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties -- that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it's up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.

And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They'll get you through the inevitable rough patches.Michelle and I wish you and Melania the very best as you embark on this great adventure, and know that we stand ready to help in any ways which we can.

The Minnesota Vikings were awarded TE Blake Bell on waivers from the San Francisco 49ers Sunday morning, adding to a position that has Kyle RudolphDavid Morgan and rookie Bucky Hodges.
Bell was a fourth-round pick of the 49ers in 2015 and had 19 catches for 271 yards in his two years with San Francisco. He played in 13 games for the 49ers last year.

First I heard of it! Vikings place defensive tackle Datone Jones on IR, may part ways

Defensive tackle Datone Jones was placed on injured reserve by the Vikings on Saturday because of a shoulder injury, but the team could still move on from their offseason signee.
The Vikings attempted to move Jones from outside linebacker to defensive tackle and the experiment did not go as they had anticipated. Rookie Jaleel Johnson outplayed Jones during camp, wrapping up the 3-technique spot.

Jones was a first-round pick of Green Bay in 2013 and spent his first four seasons with the Packers.

The Vikings signed free-agent Riley Reiff this offseason to play by Boone and the expectation was the left side of the line would be shored up. But Reiff missed significant time in training camp because of a back injury suffered on the first day.
As for Boone, it appeared as if he was having trouble adjusting to the Vikings’ zone running scheme and soon there were whispers that his roster spot could be in jeopardy.
Jettisoning Boone seemed unlikely given he was due $6.6 million this season, including $3.4 million in guarantees, but it was odd when he was replaced by Nick Easton in the second quarter of the Vikings’ third preseason game as many of the starters remained. Boone also had missed the Vikings’ second exhibition in Seattle because of an apparent knee injury.
On Saturday, the Vikings decided despite the money Boone was owed, and the fact he carried a $6.7 million salary-cap hit for this season, his subtraction from the 53-man roster would be best for all sides.
Boone was cut after one season and, according to the Star Tribune, after he declined the team’s request to take a pay cut. Even if he had accepted the salary reduction, there’s no guarantee he would have kept a starting job that’s now expected to go to Easton with rookie third-round pick Pat Elflein starting at center.
While the decision will be an expensive one for the Vikings, Boone’s release reportedly will cost Minnesota $3.4 million in dead money, it’s the right move.
