OT: So long to provincialism and the good ole days...

Williams Arena is approaching its 100th birthday, but the historic Gophers basketball venue could be getting a new name.

The Gophers announced Thursday that they are working with Independent Sports & Entertainment (ISE) to secure potential naming rights for the building that’s been known as Williams Arena for 75 years.

As the home of Gophers men’s and women’s basketball, it’s also affectionately known as “the Barn.” But with college sports going through major change, funneling money to athletes through name, image and likeness (NIL) payments, athletic departments everywhere are looking for ways to raise money.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for a company to align themselves with the University of Minnesota and with Gopher Athletics,” U athletic director Mark Coyle said in the news release. “We look forward to working with ISE to find a naming rights partner that will help us continue to provide world-class experiences for our student-athletes.”

When the Barn opened in 1928, it was originally called the University of Minnesota Field House. It was renamed Williams Arena in 1950 to honor former Gophers football coach Dr. Henry Williams. He’s a college football Hall of Famer, but as the athletic department has noted, he didn’t have a connection with Gophers basketball.

The university hired a company two years ago to evaluate Williams Arena for possible renovation. But the landscape has already changed drastically with NIL payments for players and an expected ruling this spring that will allow schools to pay athletes about $20.5 million each year in revenue sharing.

Those rapid changes caused the Gophers to table Williams renovation discussions. Instead, they are looking into creative ways to generate more money to help in recruiting.

Man....the NFC looks loaded this year again
Posted by: StickierBuns - 04-03-2025, 04:35 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (2)

The NFCN got better, I think. Philly, Washington again going to be very good. Rams will be right there. Tampa and Seattle might be better. Teams like Atlanta and Arizona could be tough outs. Jesus. Its exciting that Minnesota seems to really have improved in free agency, but its also very necessary to keep pace in a highly competitive division and conference. And although how you see the schedule strength now compared to end of year often changes, I don't envision Minnesota's schedule being anything but a complete bear all year.

Real reasons for optimism from a variety of NFC teams. Dayum. Going to be a dogfight.

Kelly recruited Fries, Vikes weren't initially looking to sign him
Posted by: StickierBuns - 04-03-2025, 03:51 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (19)

Did anyone else catch that this week? Not sure if it was KOC that said it at the meetings, but when they signed Kelly, he said I can get Spud (his name for Fries) to come here. Vikings were like hell yes, let's do this. I guess Minnesota thought they wouldn't have a chance because he had SO many suitors and thought he'd get priced out. Very cool anecdotal story, gotta love the Minnesota Vikings culture, facilities and staff....makes a difference. Oh....and the money. Smile I knew the story of Kelly recruiting Fries, didn't know the part about Minnesota not attempting to sign him until Kelly said he could get him to come.

And in watching all the interviews that KOC did this week, the guy looks and sounds very confident and satisfied with where they are going and the team he has.

Without the Browns and Falcons taking hind tit we had the least productive rookie class. 30/32 for the boys in purple. Turner and Will the trill played.

  OT: Man the Torpedos!

In the aftermath of Kay spilling the beans, the question on everyone's mind was whether the Yankees were breaking any rules.

The answer, in short, is no. Major League Baseball confirmed on Sunday that torpedo bats are perfectly legal, which means they'll only be going away if the league eventually decides to outlaw them.
